High Above the Clouds: Chrispin’s Ambitious Musical Journey in the Himalayas
High above sea level and far removed from a traditional DJ booth, Chrispin has embarked on one of the most daring projects of his career—a live electronic set filmed at 15,000 feet in Nepal’s breathtaking Annapurna Circuit. This stunning endeavor has been reimagined as a cinematic short film, artfully merging years of original productions and remixes with the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Himalayas. The resulting project is a harmonious blend of music, storytelling, and raw natural grandeur crafted into an immersive experience.
The Creative Vision
After nine months of dedicated work, Chrispin’s project encapsulates his quest for creative freedom, melding his signature sound with narrative depth and visual symbolism. In an exclusive conversation with EDMHouseNetwork, he elaborates on his inspiration, the challenges faced, and how this mountainous performance marks the initiation of a more expansive artistic chapter.
A New Beginning
“I’m really excited and kinda nervous,” Chrispin shares candidly. “This is a culmination of all the foundational phases of my work. That’s basically years of experimentation with sound and the imagery behind it. The project speaks about destiny and the sacrifices we make for the things we love.”
The excitement is palpable as he reflects on the unique concept, acknowledging the blend of music and cinema that has rarely been executed in the electronic music scene.
The Challenges of Filming
Creating this project has not been without its hurdles. Chrispin explains, “Before coming up with something this specific, I sought meaning in the music I’ve created over the years. The whole cinema aspect revealed itself naturally, as I adore both music and the mountains, regardless of the project.”
The actual shoot, however, was demanding. Just him and a friend braved the elements, trekking while carrying expensive equipment through unpredictable weather conditions. “I have nothing but deep appreciation for the place without which this project would not have been possible,” he notes, highlighting the stunning backdrop that elevates the performance from mere music to an artistic statement.
Expectation vs. Reality
As the film neared completion, Chrispin found himself reflecting deeply on the nuances. “I could always make changes or add more elements, but I stopped when I felt satisfied with the layers of narrative I could express. I spent days working on just a few seconds of footage or a single bar of music,” he admits.
The initial perception of the project varied; many mistook it for a standard live set and failed to recognize the underlying cinematic narrative. Nonetheless, as viewers delve deeper, the film’s intricate layers become apparent, revealing the artist’s proud accomplishment.
An Unforgettable Premiere
The project reached new heights when Chrispin previewed the film in an actual theater. He describes the experience as an emotional milestone. “Watching all that hard work on a big screen was surreal. It definitely left me hungry for more and affirmed my future plans.”
Breaking Boundaries
For Chrispin, stepping outside his comfort zone was not merely a goal but a necessity. “It’s vital to do something unprecedented—it sets you apart,” he highlights. Yet, as he immersed himself in the project, he found that his initial intentions transformed into a labor of love, driven by curiosity and passion.
The Fusion of Art Forms
The blending of musical styles, elements, and genres stands at the core of Chrispin’s artistic vision. He carefully considered how his already composed musical set aligned with the film’s narrative, indicating a disciplined approach to editing. “I crafted the film on top of the musical layer, but making tough decisions was essential. Sometimes I had to abandon a beautiful musical piece because it didn’t support the visuals or the story,” he explains.
Each sound choice and visual element was meticulously integrated. For instance, his reinterpretation of Daft Punk’s “RAM” underwent significant changes. “I had to transform a whole section with tempo and rhythm changes, huge reverbs, and automations to enhance the storytelling,” he notes, demonstrating how music can elevate narrative tension.
Looking Forward
As Chrispin wraps up this intricate project, he is eager to continue exploring his artistic pursuits. “I’m finishing an album that has long been overdue and developing other facets like visuals and plots,” he reveals. His debut single, titled “Zephyr,” is imminent, and he’s actively seeking collaborations with those who resonate with his vision, eagerly anticipating what’s to come next.
