Kaytranada: Catching Up and Crafting New Sounds

Catching Up on Life and Family

“I’m just catching up on life,” Kaytranada shares over the phone on a Wednesday evening in February. After an extensive 2025 tour, which featured over 62 shows, including a co-headlining fall arena tour with Justice, it makes sense for the renowned producer to take a breather. He is soaking up downtime in his native Montreal, enjoying moments with family and celebrating the arrival of a new nephew.

Glamour Amid Downtime

Even in this quieter phase, Kaytranada’s life is interspersed with glitz. In early February, he hosted a celebratory party in honor of his Grammy nominations for Best Remixed Recording and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “Space Invader,” featured on his acclaimed 2025 album Ain’t No Damn Way! The event, in partnership with fellow nominee PinkPantheress and sponsored by Patron—the Grammy’s official tequila partner—reflected both his success and his connections in the industry.

Reflecting on the Grammy Journey

While he left the event without a win, Kaytranada finds solace in the acknowledgment of his ten Grammy nominations and two wins since 2021. He is now shifting gears into studio mode, with aspirations to create another album—the fifth in his evolving discography, which began with his beloved debut, 99.9%, in 2016.

A Legacy of Fusion and Freedom

Over the past decade, Kaytranada (born Louis Keven Celestin) has carved a niche for himself, blending electronic, hip-hop, R&B, and what he affectionately terms “boogie music.” During our conversation, he comes across as warm and enthusiastic, eager to discuss everything from music and touring to tequila and personal growth.

The Inspiration Behind His Next Project

“Basically, I’ve been really ready to work on my next project,” he admits. “I want to have an approach where I release more material.” Reflecting on the past, he yearns to return to a time when artists regularly dropped albums, embracing a more fluid relationship with their work. “I really want to have a deadline so it can maybe come out next year, but we’ll see.”

Returning to His Roots

When asked about the direction he aims to pursue, Kaytranada reveals a desire to explore a new sound while reconnecting with his roots. “It’s kind of like a time machine,” he explains, looking back to how he created music in his early years.

Nostalgia and Growth in Artistry

The conversation turns to his debut album. Reflecting on 99.9%, he admits, “99.9% of that album I would do differently,” though he doesn’t harbor regrets. Comprised of years of work, it was a product of its time—shaping himself as an artist. He recognizes the album’s impact, noting, “This is one of the albums where I was the most free, because it was really no rules.”

Defining His Signature Sound

Kaytranada shares how his unique style emerged from a desire to blend hip-hop and R&B with electronic music, a departure from the conventional approaches of the genre. “For some reason, I’m the pioneer of what that became,” he laughs. The notion of having a “Kaytranada sound” bemuses him, as he acknowledges the plethora of inspirations that fueled his creativity.

The Pressure of Signature Success

Despite the recognition he has garnered, Kaytranada ponders the balancing act of expectation and authenticity. “I thought about that for a long time,” he reflects on the pressure to top his previous work. He finds comfort in viewing each project as a chapter rather than a competition.

Hollywood Influence on Creativity

Moving to Los Angeles transformed Kaytranada’s perspective on his music career, shifting it from a hobby to a legitimate profession. He notes the importance of his environment—being surrounded by fellow creatives adds a layer of comfort and motivation.

Celebrating Achievement

Kaytranada describes hosting a Grammy party with PinkPantheress as a blend of celebration and community. “I kept the tradition going,” he explains, acknowledging that the festivities provided a much-needed moment of joy among peers. The show of support from fellow artists solidifies his standing in the music community.

Life on Tour: Memories with Justice

Reflecting on the co-headlining tour with Justice, he recalls how the collaboration was inspired by a previous show in Paris. Touring with one of his musical idols was a significant milestone in his career, blending respect with shared experiences.

Connecting with the Audience in Large Venues

Kaytranada recounts how his team’s innovative ideas, like a floating stage during the Justice tour, aimed to create an engaging atmosphere in large arenas. His desire to foster a party-like environment persists, drawing on inspirations from past experiences in the music scene.

The Evolution of Kaytranada

As he looks towards the future, Kaytranada embraces the idea of being a documenter of his life through music. Each album represents a snapshot of his journey, allowing him to explore a spectrum of sounds and emotions reflective of his growth as an artist. In doing so, he invites listeners to join him on an evolving journey, rather than expecting a constant replication of past successes.
