Integration of Honeywell Technology into UA’s Alabama Mobility and Power Center Battery Research Lab

The New Battery Research Lab Will Enable the Training of the Next Generation of Battery Engineers and Operators

A Groundbreaking Collaboration

The University of Alabama’s Alabama Mobility and Power Center (AMP) is taking a giant leap into the future with the integration of Honeywell’s AI-powered Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform (Battery MXP) in its cutting-edge battery research lab. This collaboration not only signifies the university’s commitment to innovation but also aims to enhance the training of engineers and battery operators on a national scale.

Honeywell’s Battery MXP is designed to optimize operations for battery manufacturers by improving cell yields and accelerating facility startups. This state-of-the-art platform is particularly crucial in an era where electric vehicles and energy storage systems are rapidly growing in importance.

A Hub for Modern Mobility and Power Technologies

The AMP Center serves as a pivotal research and development hub, focusing on the nexus of modern mobility and power technologies. It not only aims to develop advanced charging infrastructure but also plays a crucial role in managing power delivery to support the anticipated growth of electric vehicles and their corresponding battery systems.

In this progressive environment, Honeywell’s Battery MXP is set to be the exclusive automation platform guiding manufacturers in their quest to scale production of high-quality batteries. This is essential for meeting the ongoing and future electrification needs that characterize today’s society.

Bridging Industry and Academia

Mike Oatridge, the executive director of the Alabama Mobility and Power Center, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. “The AMP Center was created to connect industry, academia, and state initiatives around the future of mobility and power,” he states. The deployment of Battery MXP not only supports Alabama’s automotive industry but also aims at fomenting growth across data centers, grid stability, and long-term electrification goals within the state.

This collaborative effort underscores the necessity of intertwining academic resources with industry practices. By doing so, the AMP Center aims to produce a skilled workforce adept at navigating the intricacies of battery technology and manufacturing.

Preparing for a Future of Innovation

As emphasized by Russ Ford, President of Honeywell Process Automation Solutions, the rapid evolution of battery technology necessitates advanced production capabilities and a skilled workforce. The deployment of Battery MXP at the AMP Center serves as both a catalyst for innovation and a platform for education. This will prepare the next generation of engineers for careers in a field that is experiencing unprecedented global growth.

Furthermore, the AMP Center’s initiatives are framed by a commitment to ensuring that we not only keep pace with the demands of modern technology but also lead in its development.

Optimizing Electrode Production

One area of focus within the AMP Center will be to enhance the electrode production process, which is traditionally one of the most challenging aspects of battery manufacture. Honeywell is collaborating with FOM Technologies to develop this component within Battery MXP. This partnership aims to provide an end-to-end automation solution that ensures safer batteries for users, thereby addressing a critical aspect of consumer safety and product reliability.

Hands-On Experience for the Future Workforce

Anticipated to open in the summer of 2026, the battery research lab will be one of the first pilot battery production sites available to external organizations. This initiative is pivotal in boosting workforce training and development. AMP will offer hands-on experience with Honeywell’s comprehensive automation technologies, allowing students and engineers to acquire the skills necessary for a flourishing career in advanced manufacturing.

This focus on practical training enriches the educational experience, catering not only to theoretical knowledge but also to real-world applications, thus fortifying the pipeline of talent entering the industry.

A Legacy of Excellence at the University of Alabama

The University of Alabama, the state’s flagship university, has a long history of driving economic growth through innovative teaching and research. With over 200 degree programs and more than 30 research centers, it shapes a better world through a commitment to excellence and creative inquiry. By integrating initiatives like the Battery Research Lab at the AMP Center, the University of Alabama is laying down a foundation for sustainable growth and technological advancement that will resonate well beyond its campus.

As the state’s largest higher education institution, UA not only drives education but also catalyzes economic development within Alabama and beyond. The future of battery engineering and technology looks promising, thanks to such collaborative efforts between academia and industry.
