Nikka Lorak Delivers Deep, Dark & Hypnotic ‘Life of a Genius’ – Out Now on Species Records.
Nikka Lorak, a name that resonates with innovation and creativity in the electronic music landscape, has unveiled her newest single, “Life of a Genius.” Released via the highly regarded Species Records on October 9th, this track is a hauntingly captivating exploration of sound that draws listeners into a world of electronic noir.
Hailing from Belgium, Nikka Lorak is not just a DJ and producer—she is an artist whose varied experiences as a fashion photographer and filmmaker significantly shape her musical artistry. This duality is evident in her work; each soundscape she creates is imbued with a cinematic quality that evokes vivid imagery, transporting her audience to the realms that inspired her. When one listens to “Life of a Genius,” it becomes clear that Lorak has perfected the art of intertwining visual storytelling with her musical compositions.
The track opens with an atmosphere reminiscent of a dark, rainy night in London’s gritty neighborhoods. It pulses with a deep, resonant bassline, layered with acid tweaks and the distant sounds of sirens and claps, creating a palpable tension. As a long-time resident of London, and a DJ at iconic venues like Fabric and Ministry of Sound, Lorak’s connection to the city is palpable, with the vibe of the track echoing the urban landscapes she’s come to know deeply.
‘Tell me if you mean it? / It’s the life of a Genius /
No exercise for an exorcism / I’m working out my demons…’
Richly layered and multi-genre in its essence, “Life of a Genius” artfully fuses elements of techno, electro, and trance, delivering a UK Garage vocal that’s fresh and invigorating. The track artfully embodies the heart and soul of a city, reflecting the dichotomy that resides within Nikka herself—the battle between shadows and light, chaos and calm. This tension is what makes the song a perfect soundtrack for those late-night dancefloor moments when one seeks both escape and introspection.
Nikka Lorak has joined a respected label family at Species Records, which boasts an impressive roster of artists like Patrice Bäumel, Blake Light, and Thomas Gandey. The label is known for curating some of the most cutting-edge melodic house and techno, making it a fitting platform for an artist who navigates the complexities of sound and emotion as Lorak does.
In her own words, Nikka describes “Life of a Genius” as a “reflection on the deepest and not-so-pretty corners of my soul.” She conveys that the track is characterized by the essence of a soul at war with itself, highlighting themes of dark thoughts, dangerous decisions, and broken rules. “Nothing about it was meant to feel safe,” she reveals, emphasizing the raw, almost criminal element threaded throughout the music. It is this authenticity that sets her apart; the music serves as an exorcism for her inner turmoils.
“Life of a Genius came from the parts of me I normally keep locked away,” states Lorak. The aggression, darkness, hunger, and instinct to survive are palpable in each beat and note of this track, allowing listeners to experience what it means to confront one’s demons through the power of music.
