Before the LED walls of D-EDGE São Paulo became a rite of passage for touring house and techno DJs, the club was a gamble in Campo Grande, the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul. A new Mixmag feature looks back on more than 25 years of the brand, talking to DJs, programmers, architects and founder Renato Ratier. From Campo Grande to Barra FundaBorn in São Paulo but raised in Campo Grande, Ratier was already shaking up the local scene in the mid-1990s with a fashion shop that also sold party tickets, a radio show called Tecnovallet and a pocket magazine. In 1996 he became the first client of Hypno, Brazil’s first DJ agency, booking drum & bass hero DJ Patife.D-EDGE opened in Campo Grande in 2000, already carrying the visual signature of designer Muti Randolph. The original room ran until 2005, when it was forced to close because a hospital was being built next door. By then Ratier had made his move: the São Paulo club opened on 22 April 2003.The D-EDGE São Paulo blueprintThe Barra Funda venue won praise at home and abroad for its sound and its look, with LED panels pulsing in sync with the music. In 2011 Randolph teamed up with architects Marcelo Pontes, Paula Zemel and Eduardo Chalabi on an expansion, because the club could no longer fit everyone who wanted to get in.The booking policy built its reputation. DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs poll put D-EDGE at No. 25 in 2012 and credited it with playing a crucial part in Brazil’s underground scene. The magazine pointed to bookings such as Ricardo Villalobos, Vitalic, Laurent Garnier and DFA Records, and to doors that stayed open until noon. The club has also been a launchpad for local talent: its team estimates that around 1,500 Brazilian DJs play there in a normal year.A multi-site storyThe brand now reaches beyond São Paulo. D-EDGE Rio opened in November 2023 in a 2,500 sqm space in the Saúde district, again with Randolph’s aesthetic. It is the official club of the Hot Beats Music Conference on 22–23 May 2026. Mixmag also visits Surreal Park, Ratier’s latest passion project, where the founder talks openly about his wife’s long recovery after she spent time in a coma following surgery in 2024.More news on BEATMAG TV.
