Portola Festival 2026 turned San Francisco’s Pier 80 into a two-day crash course in dance music history, putting EDM’s arena era, ’90s big beat veterans and a wave of internet-raised producers on the same waterfront bill.
Portola Festival 2026: five years, one pier, several generations
Goldenvoice’s 21+ festival returned for its fifth edition on September 26–27. Saturday belonged to Robyn, who chose Portola as her only festival date of the year after releasing Sexistential, and to Dog Blood. The Skrillex and Boys Noize duo played their first show under that name since 2019, and it was billed as their only show of 2026. On Sunday, Swedish House Mafia closed the main stage. Tiësto made his Portola debut and Four Tet played live.
The undercard spanned decades. Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and Tricky played on the same pier as DJ Shadow, who marked 30 years of Endtroducing…... Mel C played a DJ set and Mike D brought his new Mike D 5D project. A younger, very online cohort also had plenty of room: Ninajirachi, underscores, ear, horsegiirL, Bassvictim and Fcukers all played. Club favourites Ben UFO, Daphni, Overmono and VTSS covered the deeper end.
What landed, and what didn’t
Early reviews singled out the Dog Blood reunion as a weekend highlight. Ninajirachi earned the top average rating of any Portola set on the fan-review app enc0re. underscores got a hometown welcome, since the pop-meets-chaos producer grew up in San Francisco. Users of the same app said the Warehouse sounded much better, after sound problems dogged the stage in the festival’s first couple of years. They also noticed lower volume, which they blamed on noise complaints from local residents.
Despacio, the custom vinyl-only sound system built by James Murphy, the Dewaele brothers of Soulwax/2manydjs and engineer John Klett, ran again this year. It also had its own Friday-night “5th Birthday” party at Pier 80 for passholders. Other recaps praised the energetic ASL interpreters. Patchy phone signal remained a familiar complaint, and ravers struggled to find their friends.
The bigger picture
Portola founder Danny Bell, a Goldenvoice senior VP of talent, was named Billboard’s 2026 dance executive of the year. On this year’s evidence, his festival now puts big-room headliners, cult club acts and internet-native producers on the same bill.
