Billboard’s Dance Moves Roundup: April 2023 Highlights
In this week’s issue of Billboard, the Dance Moves roundup showcases an exciting surge of talent and remarkable milestones across various dance charts. As of April 4, several artists are making waves, with BONNIE X CLYDE, deadmau5 alongside Steve Appleton, ILLENIUM, David Guetta, Dustin Lynch, and Dean Turnley all achieving new heights. Let’s delve into the key highlights of this vibrant week in dance music.
BONNIE X CLYDE Takes the Crown
The electronic duo BONNIE X CLYDE has officially secured their first No. 1 on a Billboard chart with “What Love Can Do,” which has ascended to the top of the Dance/Mix Show Airplay. Formed in Fairfax, Virginia, in 2015, the duo—comprising producers Daniel Litman and Paige Lopynski—has been steadily making their mark. “What Love Can Do” is their seventh entry on the Dance/Mix Show Airplay, adding to a series of successful tracks, including three top 10 hits: “Love Is Killing Me” (peaked at No. 2), “Need Ya” with FOMO (peaked at No. 2), and “Memory” with SUM SUN (peaked at No. 5).
In addition, this achievement marks a significant victory for Breakaway Projects, the company behind the Breakaway Music Festival. Launched in February 2025, Breakaway Projects aims to spotlight emerging artists, and with a partnership with The Orchard for distribution, they are carving out a niche in the music industry.
deadmau5 and Steve Appleton Join Forces
This week, deadmau5 makes a grand return to the Dance/Mix Show Airplay charts with “Science,” featuring British singer-songwriter Steve Appleton, who debuts at No. 38. Released on February 20 through EpicWin/mau5trap/Create, this track represents deadmau5’s 16th entry on the chart and his first since the John Summit remix of “I Remember” back in 2023. For Appleton, this marks his second appearance on a Billboard chart, following his feature on Tiësto’s “Blue” in 2020.
“Science” is set to feature on deadmau5’s upcoming album, his first solo studio LP since the critically acclaimed W:/2016Album/, which topped the Top Dance Albums chart back in 2016. Fans are buzzing with anticipation for this project!
A Genre-Bending Collaboration: ILLENIUM, David Guetta, and Dustin Lynch
This week also witnesses an exciting collaboration among ILLENIUM, David Guetta, and country artist Dustin Lynch. Their new track “Die Living” debuts impressively at No. 9 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Released on March 20 through Republic Records, the song quickly racked up an impressive 1 million official streams in its opening week, according to Luminate.
This collaboration is particularly noteworthy for its genre-blending approach. ILLENIUM celebrates his 70th entry on the chart, securing his spot among the top five artists with the most entries. Notably, it’s his 11th top 10 hit. Meanwhile, David Guetta extends his record with a staggering 98th visit to the chart, marking his 28th top 10—tying with Kygo for the most in history. For Dustin Lynch, it represents a significant milestone as he ventures into the dance music realm with this track, despite boasting an extensive history of 17 entries on Country Airplay, including nine No. 1s.
Dean Turnley Makes His Mark
Lastly, Melbourne-born DJ and producer Dean Turnley has made his Billboard chart debut with “Actin’ Tough,” which rises to No. 21 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Released on March 20 through ROSSI.HOME/GRXWN/Chaos/Astralwerks/Interscope Capitol, this viral hit earned an impressive 689,000 U.S. streams in its opening week. Turnley’s rapid ascent reflects the dynamic and evolving landscape of the dance music scene, and his unique sound is already garnering significant attention.
