Colorful Beats: The Journey of Levi Wijk and His Vibrant Sound
The word bunt, translating to “colorful” in German, is a fitting descriptor for Levi Wijk’s sound, attitude, and evolving story. Known for his high-energy performances that light up the stage, Wijk embodies positivity and a relentless drive to break down barriers between artists and their audiences. “That’s what the Bunt. brand is all about,” he explains. “Sweat, energy, honesty, positivity, happiness, and killing the barriers that some artists have between them and their fans.”
The Rise of a Viral Sensation
Wijk’s musical journey took flight nearly 12 years ago with a viral single that was his breakout moment. What followed was a rollercoaster of successes and setbacks: several record deals, the loss of a bandmate, financial struggles, and awe-inspiring shows in front of thousands of fans. Each challenge has not only tested his resolve but also added vibrancy to his music. His distinctive sound—loud, vivacious, and arena-ready—has firmly established him among the EDM elite. With his 2023 smash single “Clouds,” Wijk has solidified his place on festival lineups worldwide, ensuring he will be a sought-after act for years to come.
Remote Encounters From Paradise
In a recent Zoom call, Levi’s enthusiasm was palpable. He joined the call at 9 AM on my end, while it was early evening for him in Phuket, Thailand—a location that exuded tropical vibrancy. “Oh, my God, thank you for joining!” he exclaimed, his German accent thick with excitement. He shared views of cerulean waters lapping against white sands, revealing just how far he had come from the early days of his career.
Excited about his upcoming shows in India, Wijk described the energy he anticipated from the crowd: “We’ve never been there, but I think it’s gonna be good. I think the Indian people are super-hype, from what I’ve heard.”
A Tour to Remember
Wijk was more than willing to recount highlights from his journey thus far. “I just played a 12,000-cap stadium show at the Zenith in Munich; I crowd-surfed in Paris; I sold out the Shrine in L.A. We even threw a pop-up show in a pizzeria and another in a barbershop in New York.” The stage is set for a thrilling Coachella debut in the upcoming spring. “The show we’re going to put on is going to be something people haven’t seen before,” he promises.
A Colorful Background
The path to stardom, however, has not been a straight line. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, to a Turkish immigrant who worked at Porsche and DJed on the weekends, Wijk’s musical journey was sparked by the influence of his older brother. At 15, he was captivated by a YouTube video of Swedish House Mafia creating music in real-time.
“It’s like, maybe I just need a keyboard to make a song,” he recalls, reflecting on that pivotal moment of inspiration. Choosing to focus on music software instead of instruments, he began crafting tracks on his laptop, embarking on a journey that would eventually lead to international acclaim.
The Bunt. Phenomenon
Wijk teamed up with a childhood friend, Nico Crispin, who shared his passion for music. Their collaboration took off as they experimented with sounds and styles. They eventually settled on the name Bunt. and turned to YouTube to gain traction, sharing their tracks alongside popular EDM compilations. Their innovative marketing strategy sparked curiosity, leading to their first record label deal with Germany’s Kontor Records.
Wijk vividly remembers the day they signed their first deal at just 16 years old. “I hung up and I was absolutely freaking out. I was like, ‘We just made €2000! That is absolutely crazy.’ It was the first feeling that you actually can make money with music.”
Navigating the Ups and Downs
Their journey took a significant turn with the release of singles like “Journey” and “Harmonica,” which gained traction quickly. A new manager from Interscope Records helped them refine their sound, but success didn’t come without challenges. After significant breaks between releases and a transformative process of healing post-career breakups, Wijk soon found himself striking out alone.
In 2021, Crispin decided to leave Bunt., paving the way for Wijk to fully embrace his creative vision. While adjustments were challenging, including moving back to Germany and finding part-time work, Wijk remained resolute. He set deadlines for himself, determined to find success or walk away from music altogether.
The Turning Point
Everything changed with the release of “Clouds” in January 2023. The track skyrocketed, becoming a viral sensation and catapulting him into the spotlight as streams soared into the hundreds of millions on Spotify. “It basically changed my life overnight,” he said, reflecting on the effect it had on his career.
Embracing a New Era
Now, Levi Wijk is on an exhilarating world tour, booming in popularity and filling venues with his electric presence. He’s made headlines by performing at iconic locations like Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, eagerly anticipating what’s next, including a debut at Coachella.
Wijk embodies a refreshing, optimistic spirit amid the chaotic whirlwind of the music industry. “I don’t know where it comes from, but I think I’m genuinely just a happy person,” he muses. As he prepares for 2026, he looks toward the future with ambition, aiming to create a debut album that continues to reflect his vibrant essence and unique sound: “I would definitely say that a Bunt. show is something that you haven’t experienced before. That is something that I say with a big, big confidence.”
