Industrial AI: Expanding Influence in Heavy Industries

Leveraging AI for Enhanced Manufacturing Efficiency

In the fast-paced world of manufacturing, downtime stands out as one of the most significant challenges companies face. According to industry expert Christensen, “The worst thing that can happen to us as a manufacturer is downtime.” This sentiment encapsulates the urgency of integrating advanced technology to minimize disruptions. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), manufacturers like Jabil are employing innovative solutions that empower operators and streamline operations, resulting in faster resolutions and improved productivity.

Triage at the Operator Level

Traditionally, when an issue arises, the protocol often involves immediately calling for help, which can lead to delays—especially when time is of the essence. However, Jabil’s approach encourages operators to perform first-level triage on equipment issues. Christensen emphasizes this shift, stating that operators can now conduct initial assessments when they see warning signals, allowing them to correct issues on the spot. If they do need to escalate the problem, they come to senior engineers with valuable context. This results in quicker resolutions and minimizes the impact of downtime on production processes.

AI Innovations in Procurement

Beyond operational efficiency, AI is also transforming the procurement process at Jabil. The company has introduced a procurement assistant that utilizes large language model (LLM) capabilities to enhance its existing procurement platform. This tool aids employees in identifying cost-saving opportunities for materials, making the procurement process not only quicker but smarter. As a direct impact, the integration of AI significantly reduces the likelihood of waste and optimizes budgeting, which is critical for maintaining a competitive edge.

Shortening Sales Cycles

Sales teams at Jabil are also benefiting from AI through a dedicated customer research assistant. This agent enables the sales professionals and business development teams to access customer and market information almost instantaneously. Christensen explains the advantage: “Instead of taking days and weeks with a couple of analysts, they can now get there in minutes.” This quick access to data allows Jabil to remain agile in a competitive landscape, underscoring the importance of speed and efficiency in sales processes.

Establishing AI Governance

The successful implementation of AI tools requires a well-structured strategy. Jabil recognized this early on and established a data and AI council, sponsored by its CEO. This council brings together senior executives to define policies and compliance frameworks that govern the use of AI across the organization. The primary aim is to enhance innovation while ensuring data privacy, particularly in sensitive sectors such as healthcare and government.

Furthermore, it’s crucial for companies to communicate the purpose and benefits of AI tools throughout the organization. Jabil has undertaken initiatives to train employees on how to effectively use these tools, enhancing data literacy. As Christensen highlights, “We had to focus on data literacy, making sure that every individual employee understands what AI is and how to interface with it.” By addressing fears and misconceptions surrounding AI, Jabil aims to foster an environment where employees are both knowledgeable and confident in leveraging these technologies.

Addressing Barriers to Adoption

Despite the clear advantages AI brings, integrating new technology can pose challenges, particularly regarding employee adoption. Christensen notes that fear of the unknown can hinder progress; thus, transparent communication is vital. Jabil made it a priority to clarify that employee data would not be exposed and that compliance and data privacy were central to their mission. This focus on trust and security is essential in facilitating a smooth transition to a more AI-driven workplace.

Investments Beyond Generative AI

While the benefits of generative AI solutions are significant, Christensen emphasizes that manufacturers must continue to invest in a variety of AI technologies. For instance, computer vision plays a crucial role in automating inspections, ensuring product quality at unprecedented levels. Even the tiniest imperfections, like microscopic scratches, can profoundly affect a product’s performance. “When it comes to some of our products, even a little microscopic scratch that you wouldn’t see with your eyes does impact the performance of that system,” he explains.

This multi-faceted approach—incorporating generative AI alongside computer vision, standard statistical modeling, and machine learning—positions Jabil to capitalize on the full spectrum of technological innovations available. By integrating these technologies, the manufacturing industry is on the brink of substantial evolution, promising greater efficiency and reliability in operations.

In summary, the rise of AI in manufacturing is reshaping the landscape. From reducing downtime and streamlining procurement to improving sales cycles and ensuring compliance, AI offers a transformative potential that manufacturers like Jabil are eager to harness. By fostering an innovative culture and remaining committed to employee education, the path to a technologically advanced future is becoming increasingly clear.
