King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Leap into EDM with Alien Metal
A New Sonic Direction
Australian psych-rock trailblazers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have long been known for their genre-blurring sound and adventurous spirit. With the announcement of their upcoming EDM album, Alien Metal, they are set to embark on yet another musical evolution. This marks their first full-length dive into electronic dance music, and excitement is building as fans anticipate what this innovative turn will bring.
The Upcoming Album: Alien Metal
Set for release this summer through their own label, p(doom), Alien Metal features the band exploring uncharted musical territories. The excitement around the album has been heightened by the release of its lead single, Level 5. This new track offers listeners a taste of the band’s latest sonic evolution, drawing not just from their psych-rock roots but also from extensive experimentation with electronic textures seen in earlier works, such as The Silver Cord.
The Creative Process: Modular Synths
What makes Alien Metal particularly intriguing is its creative foundation. The album was produced around a massive Eurorack modular synthesiser, affectionately named “Nathan.” In a groundbreaking collaborative effort, all six members of the band operated this large complex device during extended recording sessions. Stu Mackenzie, the frontman, remarked that this experience fundamentally reshaped his approach to music-making, forcing him to rethink traditional methods of composition.
Joey Walker, another key member, brought a robust background in electronic production to the table. His input proved invaluable, allowing the band to fully integrate influences from techno, house, jungle, and hardcore while maintaining their unique identity. This melding of styles signifies an exciting new chapter for the band, pushing boundaries in ways not seen in their previous work.
Rave Shows in New York City
To celebrate the album’s release, King Gizzard is set to electrify New York City with a series of four performances in August. The festivities kick off with three consecutive nights at Forest Hills Stadium, a venue known for its vibrant atmosphere and storied history. Fans are especially buzzing about the final night, August 22, which will be a dedicated “rave show.” This exciting event will feature support from Moktar, an artist recognized for his unique takes on broken techno and electro.
Following their stay in Forest Hills, the band will take their show to Brooklyn’s Under the Bridge Park on August 23. There, they will be joined by German techno producer Vril, who will deliver a captivating DJ set, promising an unforgettable night filled with pulsating beats and high-energy vibes.
The Anticipation Builds
The anticipation surrounding Alien Metal and the upcoming performances is palpable among fans and music enthusiasts alike. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have consistently pushed the envelope, and this leap into the world of EDM is no exception. As they blend their unique musical identity with electronic influences, listeners are eagerly awaiting the innovative sounds and experiences that will result. The stage is set for a summer filled with exceptional music, creative experimentation, and unforgettable shows in the heart of New York City.
