Lightning in a Bottle: A Festival Like No Other
This wasn’t our first time getting lost in the magic of Northern California’s Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) festival, yet each year we attend, it becomes an even more enchanting experience. The vibrant PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) ethos is alive and thriving in Bakersfield, creating a festival environment that feels truly special. Let’s dive into the myriad elements that make LIB one of our absolute favorite festivals.
No Bad Set in Sight
Every year, we eagerly anticipate the lineup brought together by the DoLab team, and this year was no exception. Whether it’s massive headliners or emerging artists, the quality of performances is consistently stellar. DoLab has a knack for not only curating incredible lineups but also featuring jaw-dropping surprise sets that keep festival-goers buzzing long after they end.
Among the highlights, Zeds Dead undeniably stole the show on Friday night at the Thunder Stage. Their electrifying performance filled us with nostalgia and wonder as they showcased new remixes and unreleased tracks. The energy in the crowd was palpable, with all of us grooving nonstop, caught up in the moment. As if that wasn’t enough, we got to catch a late-night set from them at the Stacks Stage, which reminded us why we fell in love with them years ago.
Saturday night’s headliner, Daily Bread, brought the vibes to a whole new level. The set was an electrifying celebration, complete with flying pieces of bread and a dance floor that refused to stand still. Each carefully selected tune resonated with the festival’s playful essence, and we found ourselves trying to relive the magical moments long after the set concluded.
Empire of the Sun: A Perfect Addition
No mention of standout performances would be complete without highlighting Empire of the Sun. Their set at the Lightning Stage was a captivating spectacle, blending live vocals, intricate costumes, and an engaging performance that set them apart from the typical DJ setup. Their enchanting routines and seamlessly curated setlist crafted an unforgettable experience that kept everyone entranced.
While we could rave about every single one of the phenomenal performances over the five-day fest, the joy is in finding which sets speak to you. Our best advice? Follow the music’s flow. Explore where your heart leads you and don’t stress about conflicting schedules.
Stages for the Ages
The visual spectacle at LIB is arguably as enchanting as the music itself. The festival’s distinctive stage designs and creative layout contribute to that magical atmosphere. With multiple stages spread across the grounds and art cars meandering through, there’s always something captivating to discover.
Among the three main stages—Lightning, Thunder, and Woogie—each has its unique charm. Lightning Stage’s iconic boxcar setup, complete with oversized googly eyes, greets you every year. The Thunder Stage boasts a dynamic sound system and eye-catching shade structures, while the flowing Woogie Stage invites you to dance amidst its colorful ambiance.
As the main stages quiet down for the night, the smaller venues come alive, including the revamped Junkyard Stage, which this year featured an innovative spaceship design, adding an interactive flair that left us in awe.
Changes to the Stacks This Year
While the Stacks has always been a favorite for after-hours revelry, we felt a tinge of disappointment with this year’s redesign. In past festivals, the wooden platforms created a warm and inviting atmosphere; however, the new plastic bins detracted from the cozy vibe we cherish. Standing on those platforms contributed to the immersive experience, something we missed this year.
As night fell, the art cars lit up the festival grounds, transforming the space into a fantastical realm. It’s always thrilling to see familiar art cars alongside fresh newcomers. Of particular note was the whimsical lifeguard tower on wheels, captivating attendees as it cruised around.
Rulers of the Renegades
One of the most cherished aspects of LIB is the spirit of the renegade sets, which flourishes within the campgrounds. We stumbled upon some impressive setups, particularly the dome crew, known for crafting elaborate experiences with a powerful sound system and mesmerizing laser displays. Their commitment to creating unique musical encounters complemented the already vibrant festival atmosphere.
The roots of LIB are deeply woven into the fabric of these renegade gatherings. Its origin story dates back to 2000 when the DoLab crew hosted a small, unsanctioned celebration. From such humble beginnings, LIB has blossomed into a renowned festival that continues to embrace that underground energy.
Small Business Stars
The creativity of the vendors at LIB further enriches the festival experience. We spent hours exploring beautifully curated booths and discovering unique artisans. Interactions with small business owners were particularly heartwarming, showcasing their passion and dedication. One standout collaboration was with Enchanted Wings Co. and Seeds of Life Crystals, whose booth felt like a magical oasis, inviting festival-goers to explore.
Witnessing the energy and intent behind each vendor’s offerings reminded us of the importance of supporting small businesses and gave us a newfound appreciation for festival shopping.
What More Can We Ask For?
Ultimately, Lightning in a Bottle stands as a near-perfect festival experience. The unique energy and connection among attendees create an atmosphere that feels increasingly rare in the evolving EDM scene. It effortlessly retains that “old school raver” vibe, amidst a surge of commercialization within the festival landscape.
We’ve made cherished memories here that resonate far beyond the music. Regardless of headliners, LIB remains a festival we are eager to return to each year. Every moment becomes a treasured memory, and we leave feeling grateful for yet another round of unforgettable experiences. Each year we find ourselves swept away in the enchantment that only LIB can deliver.
