Established back in 2011, MMW has evolved away from its origins as an industry networking hub during the Winter Music Conference (WMC). “My first MMW was all about attending conference panels and pool parties associated with them,” recalls DJ Tegan Issartel. “But as Ultra Music Festival grew, the panels became less relevant because the talent wasn’t there.”
Today, the week has morphed into a spectacle of club takeovers, brand installations, and dazzling showcases that sometimes overshadow the original ethos of connection and discovery. Siriani notes the paradox: “The week has grown massively… but it’s also become saturated with events, DJs, and crowds.”

As the popularity of MMW balloons, many local artists struggle to find their footing amid the larger acts and headliners dominating the scene. “There are a lot more big shows and not as many smaller venues as before,” says Katie Ox, a local DJ who will be performing during MMW. She longs for the intimacy of past events, reminiscing, “One of my favorite memories was seeing Simian Mobile Disco in a 200-person room.”
Despite this nostalgia, Miami’s underground spirit still thrives. ZeyZey promoter Tokyo lists some of the go-to spots for local vibes, naming Dante’s, Las Rosas, and Factory Town as where you might find true underground energy amid the chaos.

As thrilling as MMW can be, it’s not without its pitfalls. Regulars of Miami’s nightlife often steer clear of the popular shows to avoid lengthy ticket lines, inflated prices, and packed dance floors. “The crowds can seem a little more ‘here to be cool’ sometimes,” Siriani observes. This trend resonates with both Ox and Tokyo, who caution visitors to treat the city with respect, as it’s home to many locals who navigate the nightlife daily.

Despite the challenges posed by the surge of visitors, MMW creates essential opportunities for local artists. As Tokyo explains, many locals spend the week supporting friends at their biggest gigs, cultivating an atmosphere of camaraderie and collective spirit within the community.
Ox highlights that while tourists flock to Miami for MMW, the local scene hums all year round. “People don’t understand that random weekends with the right parties can feel just as fun as Music Week, without all the hype,” she notes.
