Boodang and the Phenomenon of Scream: A Dance Music Legacy
Boodang’s hugely popular Scream dance-music event has set a benchmark in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene, selling out for 2026 even before the event takes place. This remarkable feat reflects both the event’s vibrant atmosphere and the journey of its co-founder, Viet Nguyen, whose love for music transformed him from a self-proclaimed introvert into a key player in the EDM landscape.
The Start of a Passionate Journey
Nguyen’s journey into the world of events began when he attended a local gathering at the New City Lounge in Edmonton at just 16 years old. His excitement was palpable as he recounted that night, stating, “I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I went there with a bunch of friends and had the best night of my life.” That moment ignited a passion that would steer the trajectory of his life towards creating unforgettable musical experiences for thousands of others.
In 1999, Nguyen organized his first event at the ACCA Banquet & Conference Centre. Armed with a $5,000 loan, he experienced the harsh realities of event planning. “We stayed up for three days, scraping gum off the floor, cleaning the hall up so that we would get our deposit back,” he explained. Despite losing all the money, the satisfaction of witnessing people come together to share in the joy of music left an indelible mark on him. From that moment forward, he was hooked.
A Financial Powerhouse
Fast forward to 2025, and Boodang has grown into an events juggernaut, raking in an impressive $10 million in revenues. The company’s success can be attributed to its carefully curated events and high-profile lineups, exemplified by the inclusion of renowned DJs like Tiësto at this year’s Scream event. Scheduled for Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, the festival anticipates attracting more than 30,000 attendees to enjoy two nights of music across four stages, complete with lights and immersive performances.
Nguyen expressed excitement about the event’s growth and the experiences it creates for attendees. “It’s like a magical escape; people can find or lose themselves on the dance floor,” he remarked. His vision to foster community through music has clearly resonated, as concert-goers from all walks of life flock to these unforgettable nights.
Navigating Challenges: The Evolution of EDM Regulations
Despite its success, the EDM scene in Edmonton has been under constant scrutiny. City council and police have historically examined late-night events, often labeled as raves, raising concerns about safety and the potential strain on healthcare resources. This scrutiny wasn’t just a passing concern; it paved the way for substantial changes that would shape the EDM landscape for years to come.
Nguyen was an essential voice in these discussions, participating in an advisory committee that worked to bridge the gap between event organizers and municipal authorities. “This happened multiple times during my career, where they put a Footloose type of demand on the city to stop dancing past a certain time,” he recalled. A critical turning point came in 2020, when comprehensive research findings led to the formulation of Bylaw 19166, establishing a legally recognized framework for EDM events in the city.
Prioritizing Safety and Community
Recognizing the challenges of drug use within the EDM community, Boodang has implemented harm reduction strategies to ensure the safety of attendees. Nguyen emphasized that while it’s impossible to control whether people will engage with drugs, the aim is to reduce the associated risks. The measures have required significant investments but are viewed as essential for fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
He commented, “I’m glad that we went through it because the city now not only accepts that we do these events; they support it because it brings tourism. It brings people into the city.” This newfound acceptance has been vital, transforming Edmonton into a global hub for ravers from countries as distant as Australia, and solidifying its place on the EDM map.
The Path Forward for Boodang and Scream
As Boodang continues to grow, Nguyen remains committed to ensuring the Scream event not only entertains but also unites diverse audiences under the shared love of music. The evolution of the EDM scene in Edmonton showcases the resilience and dedication of those involved. For newcomers and seasoned ravers alike, Boodang offers a gateway to a community where music transcends boundaries and creates lasting memories.
With Scream set to be even bigger in 2026, the anticipation builds as attendees prepare to immerse themselves in the vibrant world Nguyen has tirelessly cultivated. The journey from his first event to the success of Boodang encapsulates the transformative power of music and community, creating an inspiring narrative for future generations to follow.
