Forever Fresh: The Inspiring Rise of Female DJs Over 60
In an age where youth often dominates the music scene, a remarkable group of women is breaking stereotypes and defying expectations. Forever Fresh, a collective of female DJs all over the age of 60, has taken the stage by storm in Cologne, Germany. This initiative arose from the recognition that there was a gap in representation for older women in the music festival scene, particularly following a summer booking meeting at the C/O Festival.
A New Era for Music Festivals
Pia Leohart, a representative of the C/O Festival, shared her insights about this groundbreaking idea during an interview with RTL West. “During our summer booking meeting, we realized there really wasn’t anything for women over 60,” she noted. This realization sparked a question that would open the doors to a vibrant new scene: Would older ladies want to DJ?
Having identified this void, festival promoters reached out to senior women, inviting them to dive into the world of DJing. They began learning the nuances of mixing tracks, transitioning between songs, and handling complex audio equipment. The undertaking was even more impressive given that some of these women had never even owned a computer before.
Embracing the Challenge
As DJ Sedaction, one of the group’s instructors, reported, the challenge itself became a significant part of the appeal. “Several women said they hadn’t faced something this demanding in years—and that’s exactly why it was so exciting.” This sense of adventure and self-discovery was a driving force behind the project, inspiring women to step out of their comfort zones.
Among the participants is DJ Miss Crazy Irma, the group’s oldest member at 90 years old. Despite using a walker in her daily life, Irma transforms into an energetic force on stage, moving to the beat with hands in the air. “I don’t do things halfway, you know,” she quipped, embodying the spirit of the collective.
Performance and Reactions
The Forever Fresh DJ collective officially formed in April of 2025 and has since performed at seven gigs, including the recent festival in Cologne. Their presence has infused the local scene with a fresh, youthful energy, effectively bridging the gap between generations.
The benefits of dancing and performance extend beyond simple entertainment; participants experience improved health and well-being. Studies indicate that dancing can lead to weight loss, better blood pressure, and heightened mental health—elements much appreciated by the aspiring DJs.
Uschi Ophir, the youngest member at 64, expressed her surprise at the young audience members who showed up. “We thought only our families and friends would come,” she said. “But the younger people were amazing! Really, really great.” The enthusiasm from both the performers and the attendees created a unique atmosphere, merged by a shared appreciation for music.
Eclectic Music Selections
The playlist featured a mix of genres, including EDM from artists like David Guetta, pop hits from Miley Cyrus and Pink, and timeless classics such as “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. This eclectic selection resonated with all attendees, showcasing the diverse musical tastes that continue to transcend age boundaries.
One partygoer candidly shared her thoughts, stating, “To be honest, it was fantastic. I really didn’t expect it to be so captivating.” Another spectator remarked on the infectious energy of the performers: “The girls on stage had such good energy. It swept us all away. I’m sweating!”
Uplifting Impact
The collective’s impact is palpable not just for the women involved but also for the audience, who find joy and inspiration in the performances. Many attendees feel invigorated by the lively atmosphere created by the DJs, proving that age is no barrier to creativity and expression.
As Edeltraud Stecher-Breckner conveyed, “I’ve been waiting for this, even though I didn’t know I’ve been waiting for this. I thought, this is exactly what I want to do now.” Such sentiments encapsulate the eagerness of these women to reclaim their passions and share them with the world.
Forever Fresh is not merely a DJ group; it’s a cultural movement challenging stereotypes about aging and redefining what it means to be an artist later in life. As they continue to take stages and revitalize music festivals, these remarkable women are proving that life has many beats left to drop.
