Exploring Synergy and Community in the Scene: A Discussion on Girl Math

Girl Math sat down with us on Groove Cruise Miami to chat about their love for the community, their recent releases, and tips for women who are starting their journey in the scene.

It’s a bit cliché to say that magic happens when certain artists get together to form a fresh collaborative project, but the energy that VNSSA and Nala bring to the scene as Girl Math is impossible to ignore. Both artists already had storied solo careers, which include their near-parallel beginnings on renowned house imprint Dirtybird, releases that have been hotter than hot, and performances that have moved crowds. This made it a no-brainer for the two to join forces, and the impressive results have already begun to roll in.

Girl Math has flexed their prowess behind the decks at EDC Las Vegas, Lightning in a Bottle, and Outside Lands last year alone, and now they’ve knocked Groove Cruise Miami off their list. VNSSA had previously played the floating festival in 2024, while Nala had taken the stage in 2022, meaning they were no strangers to the experience and were both excited to be playing together. “We have so much fun playing together, you know, the energy and stuff. It gets a bit lonely up there,” said VNSSA.

“What I really love about the community is that it feels like people are really down for the cause. They’re down to dress up, they’re down to party. There’s nothing pretentious or weird about it. You can really be yourself here, which is nice,” Nala said. “No one is afraid to be themselves, everyone is having a good time, and it’s not too serious,” VNSSA chimed in. “I feel like we’re missing a lot of that in the dance music industry right now. Everyone is a bit too serious, so it kind of makes you remember we’re all here to have fun.”

The conversation shifted to plans for 2026, with both artists saying they wanted to release more Girl Math music last year. Their last release in 2025, “Rodeo”, is just a taste of what’s to come, as they said it came together easily and was one they hoped the scene could have fun with. Don’t think they’ll stick to one box, though, as both VNSSA and Nala have said they love breaking genre norms while producing. “All dance music is fair game,” Nala said, before mentioning she went on a Eurodance kick during her performance the night before.

After telling us she loved seeing Swedish House Mafia before the end of the year in San Francisco, Nala dove deeper into her love for the euphoric side of the spectrum. “You know how everyone is talking about Millennial Optimism? I’m really tapping into that right now,” she shared. “[Music] should be an escape,” VNSSA said. “That’s what I think it should be, so let’s have some fucking fun.”

Girl Math also offered some advice for women looking to make their break in the industry. “Don’t take any shit from anyone,” VNSSA said. “You might have to do a lot of this on your own, but just keep going.” “Be prepared to fight,” Nala added, then said they would be challenged and would need to be strong. Both advised those entering the scene to check out podcasts and interviews featuring other women in power positions within the scene.

The conversation continued as Girl Math spoke about what’s to come in the new year, with VNSSA sharing a bit about her upcoming album as well. Check out the full interview on YouTube to get all that added insight!
