EXIT Festival 2027 is officially happening back home: the Serbian festival will return to Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad next July for a special edition, with a full-scale comeback planned for 2028.
The organisers announced the news on Thursday, 29 October, a few days after a student-led movement beat Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling alliance in Serbia’s snap parliamentary election. “We are absolutely ecstatic to confirm that EXIT is coming home,” the festival said on social media.
Why EXIT left Serbia
EXIT has always been political. It started in 2000 as a student movement for democracy and peace. When a canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station and killed 16 people, students started protesting, and the festival backed them openly. The organisers say they came under growing pressure from the authorities as a result. After its 25th anniversary edition in 2025, EXIT confirmed it would not take place at the Fortress in 2026.
Instead, the team took the brand on the road with a 2026 global tour called “The First Chapter”. Stops included Sea Star Festival in Umag (Croatia), North Macedonia, Malta, the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Mumbai and Belgrade.
Founder and CEO Dušan Kovačević said the team had to stand with the students and the values EXIT was founded on, even if that meant losing everything they had spent their lives building.
The election that changed the plan
Voters went to the polls on 25 October. The Student List won around 53% of the vote and the alliance led by Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) got around 39%. Vučić conceded defeat on election night. The result ended more than a decade of SNS dominance. Serbia’s club community celebrated, and EXIT posted on Instagram that freedom was back in Serbia.
Kovačević had long promised that EXIT would come back when freedom did. He said his team received thousands of messages after election night asking when the festival would return.
What EXIT Festival 2027 will look like
Originally, the festival only planned to return in 2028 because it needs around 18 months to prepare a comeback on the scale it wants. After the strong response from fans, it moved the date forward. The July 2027 edition will be a gathering at the Fortress to celebrate what the festival calls “FREEDOM, UNITY, and LOVE.” The full EXIT experience follows a year later.
The date has symbolic weight too. In July 2026, EXIT and Novi Sad students met at the Fortress on the dates the festival would normally have run. Next summer’s return keeps the promise they made there. No line-up has been announced yet.
