M3F has consistently upheld the mantra that “art comes first.” This year, however, the festival is elevating this philosophy into a more tangible experience, treating it as a guiding principle in its artistic direction. Under the leadership of Art Director Norbert Bueno, the festival is evolving into an immersive dance-centric space that aims to eliminate barriers between performers and attendees, creating a unified and dynamic atmosphere. While previous editions of M3F showcased a broader range of musical genres, the 2026 lineup shifts its focus predominantly towards electronic and house music, thus redefining how visual aspects will intertwine with the auditory experience.
Bueno draws inspiration from the intimacy of traditional electronic music venues to inform this year’s aesthetic. He remarks, “When you think of dance music, electronic music, you think of where it comes from, and it’s usually small, intimate spaces… where you go to this afters and it’s late and it’s dark and it’s only one light maybe.” Capturing that essence in a sprawling outdoor park requires inventive techniques. To achieve this, lighting towers will be strategically placed, extending production elements from the main stage directly into the crowd. Bueno notes that the aim is to “create the energy with the lighting towers and not necessarily shrink the dance floor, but create one big dance floor,” allowing every festival-goer to have “their own M3F moment.”
A standout feature of the updated atmosphere is the “Signal 33” concept at the Cosmic stage. Nestled alongside a picturesque lake, this stage is uniquely designed to integrate with the natural landscape, making it feel as though it is part of the water itself. The production includes mirror towers behind the dance floor and floating reflective orbs, crafting a surreal, shifting environment as the sun descends. Buen notes that while the festival kicks off with relaxed indie sets during the afternoon, the energy is meticulously curated to crescendo as night falls. With darkness, he asserts, “the festival is going to change as well as the music,” as the production team activates dynamic lighting to inject new life into the atmosphere. They are using lighting beams that can communicate with one another, bypassing the usual constraints of traditional laser systems.
This year’s visual extravaganza also marks a more collaborative approach compared to previous years. The M3F team has proactively engaged with headliners like Peggy Gou and Mau P long ahead of the festival, providing them with blueprints and renderings to shape their performances. Bueno explains, “We gave them the blueprints… and they’ll design their show to it. Each performer is creating their own take on the lighting towers however they want to.” This collaboration not only enhances the festival’s innovation but also fosters a deeper connection between artists and their audience. Despite the increased technical complexity and the pivot toward a more expansive, party-like atmosphere, M3F remains a grounded local initiative. Community builders and artists are involved in creating large-scale signage and photo opportunities, enhancing the festival’s evolving identity while keeping local culture front and center. Bueno underscores this sentiment, stating, “The big thing here is if I want to communicate anything, so we want to create one big party, one big dance floor, where everybody comes in, feels like they’re part of the moment.”
Beyond the striking mirror towers and energetic sets, the festival remains committed to its philanthropic roots. M3F continues to operate as a 100% nonprofit entity, adapting its approach this year in light of the challenges faced in 2025, a year marked by rain and a venue shift. Organizers prioritized re-establishing the festival’s identity as a premier music event before fully embracing the nonprofit’s public messaging. This strategic pivot allows the music and art to shine while their supporting mission continues to grow behind the scenes. Bueno hints at upcoming projects for the nonprofit that are currently in the works, presenting a delicate balance between showcasing culture and supporting community initiatives. Even while the aesthetic evolves toward a sweeping electronic celebration, the heart of the event remains firmly anchored in its charitable objectives.
