Up & Up Oxford’s DJ Competition: A Rising Star in the Making
In February, Up & Up Oxford hosted its DJ competition, a much-anticipated event where student DJs showcased their skills for a chance to open for the renowned EDM duo, Shipwrek. The panelist team, expecting a night filled with electrifying tracks to energize the crowd, had their expectations pleasantly surprised when Andrew Solomon, a sophomore business analytics major from Chicago, blasted the iconic horns of the FOX NFL theme during his set.
A Chicagoan’s Musical Journey
Raised in Chicago, a city revered as the cradle of house music and a vibrant hub for EDM, Solomon’s musical journey is deeply rooted in his upbringing. Chicago has held the spotlight in the music scene since the 1980s, and in 2023, a building was officially designated as the birthplace of house music. Growing up amidst a plethora of DJs and music enthusiasts provided Solomon with not just a background but an early education in musicality. His mother’s collection of vinyl records and turntables was an enchanting source of inspiration, paving the way for a burgeoning passion for stirring sonic landscapes.
From an early age, he was immersed in the world of EDM, attending a multitude of music festivals and shows that spanned genres within electronic music. This exposure sparked an aspiration to create his own unique sound, blending influences, styles, and emotional resonance.
Crafting a Distinct Sound
After summer sessions honing his craft using his mother’s old turntables and vinyl, Solomon invested in a beginner’s controller, practicing daily. For him, it was all about joy and exploration—just mixing songs he loved without the pressure to impress anyone. His approach of mixing tracks that resonated with him led to an exploration of diverse sub-genres within EDM.
Jake Goudie, co-president of Up & Up Oxford, noted that Solomon’s creative approach and fluid transitions between tracks marked him as a standout participant. The panelists were particularly struck by his eclectic influences and innate knack for building energy in a set. Solomon’s set was reminiscent of popular Chicago artists while echoing his personal taste, an appealing combination that captured Goudie’s attention.
Moments that Make the Set Memorable
A significant highlight during Solomon’s performance was the unexpected inclusion of the NFL Sunday horns, which bewildered and delighted the audience. Goudie emphasized how this innovative touch added a memorable twist to the performance, engaging the crowd in an extraordinary way. For Solomon, such moments define his DJing philosophy. It’s not merely about technical expertise but rather about creating a unique experience that resonates with the audience.
He believes that a successful DJ set hinges on the vibe and how the audience responds, rather than on outlandish transitions or complex mixes. Solomon passionately articulated that listeners are looking for a meaningful connection with the music, a philosophy that informs his approach to every performance.
The Oxford Scene and Underground Performances
Though Solomon didn’t win the coveted opening slot for Shipwrek, his talent was notable enough to earn him recognition from Goudie and others in the local DJ community. His desire to engage with the Oxford music scene has not gone unnoticed. “He definitely seems motivated to get more involved,” Goudie stated, indicating that the drive to connect with the local community is just as important as technical skills in a DJ’s journey.
From his initial rise in recognition, Solomon sought out new performance opportunities, quickly making a name for himself among the Miami University community. He began performing at Hidden Triangle, an underground Oxford house party series that promotes inclusivity within the alternative and LGBTQ+ demographics. His journey took off when he spotted a call for performers on social media and decided to reach out.
The Thrill of Live Performance
Solomon’s first live show took place on Halloween night, an invigorating experience that turned out to be a pivotal moment in his journey as a DJ. Despite being somewhat unprepared, he embraced the challenge and delivered a performance that left a lasting impression on both the audience and event organizers. Celebrating each performance as a new adventure, he reflects warmly on those experiences, cherishing the moments of joy expressed by the audience.
“It was just a really good feeling,” Solomon said, reminiscing about the thrill of sharing his music with a crowd. The vibrant nightlife in Oxford presents an excellent testing ground for budding DJs like him, and Goudie sees clear potential in Solomon’s future performances.
The Path Ahead
As Solomon continues to navigate the world of DJing, he remains committed to creating memorable experiences. “I’m definitely having fun at every show I play,” he said. His dedication to delivering unique and engaging shows, along with his passion for music, positions him as an emerging talent in the industry. With continued support from his community and a deepening connection to the Oxford music scene, Andrew Solomon is on a promising trajectory towards a fruitful career in DJing.
