Insights from a Master Producer
Drawing on three decades of studio experience, Watson recently released his latest EP, ‘The Awakening / Flashback’. To help aspiring producers infuse their music with more depth, movement, and personality, he shares five practical tips that can make a significant difference in their productions.
1. Recording Automation Takes (While Standing Up)
One common pitfall in modern production is the mechanical feeling that can stem from using plugins. Watson advises against the overly precise copy-pasting of automation. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of jamming out various takes while standing — an approach that reintroduces a sense of humanity to the music. This technique not only helps evoke emotion but also promotes a dynamic interplay between the producer’s movements and the music itself.
2. Layering
Layering is a hallmark of Watson’s production style. He meticulously combines multiple sounds to create depth and warmth in his tracks. For instance, splitting bass sounds allows for a more nuanced low-end that adds both weight and punch. By layering different versions of the same sound and automating filters, producers can craft moments that are rich and textured, contrasting with the flatness of single sound usage.
3. Stop Cutting and Boosting Everything
Watson calls for a reevaluation of the Z-curve EQ philosophy prevalent among many producers today. The obsession with cutting and boosting frequencies can often lead to a loss of energy and warmth in music. He encourages producers to experiment with leaving certain elements untouched, fostering a more natural sound that allows tracks to breathe.
4. Inversions
Inversions in chord structures can be instrumental in conveying emotions. By experimenting with root notes and different chord voicings, producers can enhance the complexity of their music. Watson suggests that removing a note instead of adding one can create more tension and intrigue within a track, demonstrating that sometimes less truly is more.
5. 32 Bars
The structure of a track is crucial, and for genres like house and techno, 32 bars often proves to be particularly advantageous. This length provides ample opportunity for repetition while also allowing for subtle improvisation. Watson’s approach encourages producers to incorporate slight variations into their arrangements, ultimately enhancing both the cohesion and dynamism of the music.
