In a recent conversation with Electronic Groove, Sean expressed his mixed feelings about the anniversary. “Reaching 10 years is definitely something worth celebrating,” he says. “When I started the label, I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. It was simply an outlet for my own creative needs. Looking back now, I’m proud of what we’ve built.”

The process of creating ‘Decade One’ began with a vinyl double pack that spotlighted tracks he felt deserved a physical release. McCabe recounts his inspiration: “It started from wanting to press up Feliciano’s mix of ‘I Know Someone.’ That’s been one of my favorite tracks on the label.” The compilation aims to showcase the diverse flavors that Good Vibrations Music has explored over the years, offering a broader overview to new listeners.

Over ten years, the identity of Good Vibrations Music has matured while maintaining its core essence. “I’ve never felt the need to define the label by one particular sound,” McCabe explains. The label reflects a blend of deeper, uplifting, and jazzy influences while remaining rooted in soul, jazz, and funk. This versatility reflects McCabe’s own musical spectrum and personal tastes.

As both an artist and a label owner, McCabe has experienced a shift in his role over the years. Initially focused on his own music, he now spends considerable time supporting other artists in developing their projects. “My approach is still very much the same. I like projects to come together naturally through the people I’m working with,” he shares.

Platforms like Bandcamp have proven invaluable not just for connecting DJs and collectors, but also for allowing artists to release music intended for more than just the dancefloor. Meanwhile, Traxsource continues to be vital for reaching DJs, alongside the exciting resurgence of vinyl.
Defining Releases and Personal Milestones
Throughout the label’s journey, certain releases have had transformative impacts. McCabe cites Louie Vega’s remix of ‘I Wonder’ as a key milestone, marking both the label’s first vinyl release and expansion to a broader audience. He also cherishes the Harold Matthews Jr album, which not only reflects his friendships but also symbolizes the close-knit community around Good Vibrations Music.
Musical Growth and Inspirational Sources
Regarding his personal music production, McCabe mentions that while his structural approach remains consistent, his preferences have gradually leaned towards deeper, more eclectic sounds. “Working with outboard synths has influenced that,” he shares. His creative inspirations continue to draw from classic soul, jazz, gospel, funk, and house music, with collaborations allowing for ongoing personal and artistic growth.
A Look Ahead
With regard to the future of Good Vibrations Music, McCabe expresses an aspiration for the label to continue embracing variety. “I want Good Vibrations Music to keep representing quality soulful music across a broad spectrum rather than becoming known for one particular style,” he affirms. Upcoming projects include a cover of Kem’s ‘Heaven’ featuring Colonel Red and Groove Assassin, hinting at more exciting collaborations on the horizon.

As he reflects on this significant anniversary, McCabe indicates a desire to remain organic in his artistic pursuit. “As long as I’m still learning, collaborating with inspiring people, and releasing music that feels honest, I’m happy,” he concludes, embodying the spirit of growth and authenticity that has defined his long-standing career in music.
