A Festival Like No Other: Electrisize Festival 2023 Review
The Electrisize Festival has once again impressed its attendees, celebrating its seventeenth edition in style. This year saw a record-breaking 55,000 festivalgoers, over 150 artists across eight stages, and three days of pure euphoria. Held at the scenic Haus Hohenbusch in Erkelenz, Germany, the festival was elevated by perfect sunny weather, an electric atmosphere, and an astoundingly organized setup that combined large-scale production with a personalized touch.
Journey to Happiness
Traveling from Den Haag, Netherlands, I opted for public transit, following a straightforward route that included one tram and two trains, plus a ride from Venlo to Mönchengladbach. We stayed at the charming Hotel Burg Wegberg, a castle that doubles as a wedding venue, providing an amusing contrast to the festival’s vibrant vibes. The breakfast offerings were delightful, and the hotel ambiance provided a serene escape after long festival days.
Impressive Camping Experience
Although we chose not to camp, the Electricity Campsite impressed with its facilities, including a stage, a well-stocked grocery store, and impressive camping setups. The energy was just as vibrant there, making it a hotspot for those looking to immerse themselves fully in the festival spirit.
Diverse Musical Offerings
Electrisize features a unique blend of genres, including tech house, hardstyle, and techno. The Mainstage was an awe-inspiring sight with its futuristic spires, set against the blue skies. Its intricate design kept festival-goers in a state of wonder while the music pulsed through the crowd.
Tapuya was a show-stopper with an innovative DJ booth design that wrapped around the space, allowing attendees to get close to the action without needing VIP access. Stage Producer Jan Weber emphasized inclusivity, ensuring that everyone could be in the heart of the performance.
On the Hardsize Stage, headliners like Brennan Heart, Sickmode, and Ran-D created an electric atmosphere celebrating ten years of hardstyle. The nostalgia was palpable during The History of Hardsize set, which revisited classics under the skilled guidance of MC Livid.
Enriching Experiences Beyond Music
Beyond the music, the festival site was dotted with chill areas, hammocks, and pop-ups, providing festive diversions. Every corner seemed to invite relaxation or spontaneous fun, such as XL Nutrition’s pull-up challenge, which gave all participants a humbling moment of realization.
New this year, the Valley of Sound Stage created a cozy atmosphere, reminiscent of mountain festivals. Workshops in The Source area, like DIY bracelet-making sessions, were fully booked, indicating a collaborative spirit among festival-goers.
A Unique Fusion of Genres
There was an unexpected twist at the Thunder Stage, which featured live rock and metal bands, offering a stark contrast to the predominantly electronic line-up and adding a unique flair to the festival experience. Camp Asbach, a cozy bar and stage built from a camper van, showcased a different vibe, playing tech house and deep house in a relaxed setting.
On the other hand, the Turbo Beach Club was perfect for anyone looking to unwind with loved singer-songwriter favorites. It served as a get-together spot for those wishing to let loose with familiar anthems.
Culinary Delights
Dining options at Electrisize were plentiful, utilizing a token system that made transactions smooth. From pizza and butter chicken to Korean chicken tenders and the ever-popular fries with mayonnaise, the festival catered to various palates. The standout drink for me was the strawberry daiquiri ice slushie, which perfectly complemented the sunny days.
Community Spirit
What truly sets Electrisize apart is its commitment to guest experience. Co-founder Michael Frentzen reflected on the festival’s journey from a small gathering to a vast celebration, emphasizing the familial bonds formed over the years. The festival’s intimate yet large scale creates a welcoming environment, as echoed by co-founder Raphael Meyersieck.
Even behind the scenes, stories like the Saturday night fireworks delay—caused by crew members not making it to the safety zone—reinforce the strong sense of community. Instead of proceeding with the show, Frentzen prioritized the team’s experience, underscoring their close-knit culture.
Spectacular Fireworks
Each night culminated in awe-inspiring fireworks displays, a synesthetic blend of light, sound, and music that left attendees in awe. I was particularly moved by the opening night, where sounds of Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child rocked the sky as colors burst into life, illustrating the heart and soul behind the festival’s planning.
Electrisize Festival continues to prove that it can grow without losing its essence. With a rich blend of production value, diversity in music genres, and a focus on creating genuine connections among attendees, it’s easy to see why this festival remains a favorite. Plans for next year’s edition, running from August 6 to 8, 2027, are already underway, and I am eagerly looking forward to future adventures at Electrisize.
