Re:versal Records has unveiled its latest release, REV005, featuring collaborations from prominent electronic music artists. This new installment highlights the label’s dedication to reviving influential tracks on limited-edition heavyweight vinyl.
Notable Collaborations and Artists
The fifth release in Re:versal Records’ archival series showcases the talents of key figures in the electronic music scene. The compilation features renowned artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Four Tet, Floating Points, Katy B, Jeff Mills, Tony Allen, and Max Loderbauer.
Featured Track: Villalobos’ Remix
At the forefront of REV005 is Ricardo Villalobos’ expansive 14-minute remix of Beck’s ‘Cellphone’s Dead’. This reinterpretation originally surfaced in 2006 and delves into abstract realms with its intricate percussion and dynamic sound design characteristic of Villalobos’ style.
Innovative Soundscapes
On the AA-side, the collaboration between Four Tet, Floating Points, and Katy B results in the track ‘Calm Down’. This piece fuses playful house elements with Katy B’s vocals, driven by the unique production styles of Kieran Hebden and Sam Shepherd.
Afrobeat Meets Techno
Further deepening the album’s eclectic nature, Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills collaborates with legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen on ‘Locked And Loaded’. This track unites their rhythmic expertise, combining live percussion with understated electronic sounds for a profound listening experience.
Experimental Finale
Closing the release is ‘Recat’, a collaboration between Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer. This track ventures into delicate and spacious soundscapes, emphasizing intricate textures and subtle rhythms that highlight Villalobos’ diverse range.
With REV005, Re:versal Records reflects the extensive history and influence of the Universal archive while connecting various genres such as minimal techno, UK bass music, Afrobeat, and experimental electronics.
