A Dive into the Sonic Universe of Amelia Berry

Amelia Berry is not just a name in the realm of electronic music; she represents a vibrant and evolving soundscape, one that has roots deep in friendship, exploration, and raw creativity. Hailing from Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington, New Zealand), Berry is an award-winning electronic musician, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist whose journey through sound is as engaging as her various musical explorations.

The Genesis of a Sonic Journey

In her own words, Amelia captures the essence of her craft beautifully: “I love the idea of creating experiences with sound.” This ethos drives her ambition and fuels her passion for music, allowing her to transcend the mere technical aspects of production. Instead of relying solely on YouTube tutorials, her formative years were spent learning in the company of friends, blasting records and soaking in the organic, raw energy of collaboration. This grassroots approach adds a layer of authenticity to her music, echoing the communal spirit of musical discovery.

A Portfolio of Rich Musical Tapestry

With 17 years under her belt, Berry has contributed her talents to various bands and projects: Nice Birds, Polyester (previously known as Kip McGrath), Fimo, and Pocari Sweat, just to name a few. This diverse background showcases her versatility and adaptability as an artist. Each project enriches her musical palette, allowing her to weave influences from different genres and styles into her work.

Among her numerous endeavors, her solo project Amamelia stands out as a defining hallmark. This project encapsulates a retrofuturistic dreamscape, blending elements of breakbeat, jungle, drum & bass, techno-pop, and rave music. Each track is a sonic tapestry woven with meticulous intricacy, producing sounds that are both familiar and avant-garde.

Amamelia: A Retrofuturistic Dreamscape

One of the remarkable aspects of Amamelia is its ability to evoke emotions while engaging in technical artistry. Each composition is less about showcasing sheer technical ability and more about fostering an immersive atmosphere. This approach allows listeners to escape into another world, where time slices and rhythms breathe life into various moments and memories.

Musical Contributions Beyond the Studio

In addition to her artistic work, Berry also engages in promoting and supporting her peers in the music scene. Recently, she contributed promo notes for the Hi-Fi Sci-Fi mix series, further showcasing her dedication to expanding the horizons of electronic music.

The Global Influence of African Diplomat

In the same vein of collaboration and cultural exchange, Cédric Kouamé, aka African Diplomat, adds a rich layer of depth to the discussion. A multimedia artist, DJ, and radio host from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Kouamé runs Baoulecore, a specialized archive of Ivorian music, design, and culture. His work resonates strongly in the community, connecting the global audience through curated experiences of sound, art, and lifestyle.

Kouamé’s recent mix for the Hi-Fi Sci-Fi series offers a compelling insight into the musical history of West and Central Africa. His ability to delve into the 1960s and 1970s sounds of Côte d’Ivoire reflects a deep appreciation and understanding of the region’s rich musical tapestry. His mix, spanning 43 minutes and 23 seconds, is a testament to the vitality of the “golden years” of African music, preserving not just the essence but also the emotional landscape of the era.

Curating Cultural Narratives in Music

The growing music community in Aotearoa is gradually becoming a melting pot of various influences, creating spaces for different genres to coexist and flourish. By spotlighting figures like Berry and Kouamé, a narrative emerges that emphasizes the global intersections within the music industry. This synergy fosters an environment where artists can learn from one another, creating a vibrant, interconnected world where the past is honored while paving the way for future innovations.

Exploration and Reflection in Music Journalism

As a music journalist and broadcaster, Berry’s journey is a kaleidoscope of intersections—between different genres, artists, and cultural histories. She’s not just observing from a distance; she’s an active participant, influencing and reshaping the community around her. Her recent features highlight the importance of representation and recognition in music, echoing the sentiments of evolution and appreciation.

Among the readings that have inspired her journey, madison moore’s exploration in “The Hidden Histories of America’s Black Queer Clubs” stands out. This piece delves into the cultural significance of dance spaces in the ’80s and ’90s, emphasizing their role in birthing iconic music genres while addressing the historical erasure faced by such spaces.

In the swirling mix of contemporary sounds and important dialogues, Berry, alongside figures like African Diplomat, crafts a narrative of connection, exploration, and the vital necessity of understanding cultural histories within music. Their stories and the spaces they create highlight the beauty of collaboration as an antidote to the isolating nature of modern music consumption. It’s an enriching reminder that behind every track, there are deeper narratives waiting to be uncovered.
