The Influential Mentors of Brady Stoffregen: A Journey Through Education and Passion
William “Brady” Stoffregen, a student in the School of Foreign Service (SFS) at Georgetown University, articulates a deep appreciation for the mentors and advisors who have played pivotal roles in shaping his academic and personal growth. Among those, he highlights Professor Michael Bracy and Dean Mitch Kaneda, whose insightful classes not only broadened his research horizons but also allowed him to hone in on his academic interests. However, the seed for his passion in international affairs was sown long before he stepped onto Georgetown’s campus—thanks to his grandfather, Mike Lemon.
The Legacy of Family Inspiration
Stoffregen’s admiration for his grandfather is evident in his reflections. “His desire to impart a love for the world and international affairs drove me to seek out the SFS, and he continued to support my studies throughout my time here,” he explains. This familial bond has not only inspired his academic pursuits but has also fostered a lasting connection, making it all the more rewarding as Lemon prepares to attend Stoffregen’s graduation ceremony this May. As Stoffregen is set to receive his degree in Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA) with a minor in music, the support from his grandfather reflects a powerful intergenerational commitment to education.
A Unique Academic Journey in STIA
Stoffregen’s decision to pursue STIA stems from a fascination with combining science, technology, and international policy—a vital intersection in today’s rapidly evolving world. “I thought it more important than ever to ensure that I left Georgetown understanding how technology would affect my life and the lives of others,” he asserts. The program allowed him to delve into complex subjects such as technological ethics and the implications of large language models in a global context. One particularly enriching experience was his participation in the Rules-Based Global Economy Proseminar with Professor Marc Busch, where he explored how these elements interact on a global scale.
Bridging Theory and Practice
Outside the classroom, Stoffregen’s ambitions translate into practical endeavors designed to impact the world positively. After his freshman year, he returned to Cincinnati to work as an administrative assistant in Columbia Township, where he gained first-hand experience in local governance. The subsequent summer led him to a role as a business development intern at Ultratech Capital Partners, a venture capital firm focused on deep technology. This mix of experiences laid the groundwork for a global research project that he designed, which analyzed housing adequacy in various cities around the world, including Santiago, Vienna, Cape Town, and Tokyo. Supported by Georgetown’s 2025 Circumnavigator Grant, Stoffregen produced over 100 pages of research alongside a visually compelling photography magazine documenting his findings.
Creativity in Academia
Stoffregen’s academic life is interwoven with creativity, balancing rigorous coursework with activities that foster personal growth. Courses like Maps of the Modern World and the STIA introductory course are complemented by unique offerings such as Jazz History, which drew him into Washington, D.C.’s vibrant local jazz scene. “Blending my love of music with a deep dive into DC’s local jazz scene made the history feel alive and personal,” he states, where attending performances not only enriched his understanding but also connected him more deeply to the city and its culture.
Initially, Stoffregen’s focus was narrowed on professional prospects, aligning his studies with “viable” career paths. Yet, as he expanded his horizons into fields like physics, music, and urban planning, he experienced a transformation that deepened his understanding of himself and the community at Georgetown. “Between our music, comedy, fashion, and arts organizations, there is so much to be excited about as a student here beyond just academics and pre-professional opportunities,” he reflects.
A Surge of Activities and Leadership
Embracing the spirit of community at Georgetown, Stoffregen participated in various on-campus organizations, initially focusing on initiatives like the Hilltop Microfinance Initiative and Georgetown Eco-Consultants before shifting his interest toward creative ventures. His roles as a director for Added to the File, Georgetown’s fashion photography magazine, and as a host on WGTB Radio reflect his passion for creativity in a scholarly environment. Singing in the Georgetown Concert Choir allowed him to engage musically with peers, further enriching his educational experience. “People here devote themselves wholeheartedly and are unafraid to put that passion on full display,” he notes, highlighting the unique vigor of the Georgetown community.
International Experiences and Personal Growth
Stoffregen’s transformative educational journey culminated in a life-changing study abroad experience in Seville, Spain. This opportunity expanded his worldview while also reinforcing the value of his academic and social community at Georgetown. “Returning to a cascade of reunions and hugs… remains a snapshot of pure bliss in my memory,” he recalls, emphasizing how the bonds formed during his time at Georgetown have profoundly impacted his life.
Future Aspirations and Interdisciplinary Pathways
Looking ahead, Stoffregen aims to build a career at the intersection of creativity, technology, and social systems. He aspires to explore entrepreneurship where cultural and infrastructural elements meet, seeing great potential in technology’s ability to empower artists and enhance community access to well-designed systems. With an interest in urban policy and planning, he contemplates future endeavors that may include local government work or further studies, considering a move to New York City next year.
As he reflects on his journey, Stoffregen recognizes that the interdisciplinary skills gained from bridging technical knowledge and political understanding equip him to navigate diverse fields and contribute meaningfully to societal impacts. “Being in that environment has made me feel more driven, more curious, and more confident in what I can contribute,” he concludes, showcasing his growth and readiness to embrace the future.
