Greysen Malmstrom’s Journey in Career and Technical Education at Idaho State University

Introduction to CTE Month

In February, the air buzzed with excitement at Idaho State University (ISU) as Governor Brad Little officially proclaimed the month as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. This initiative shines a spotlight on the importance of CTE programs that equip students with essential skills for the workforce. Among those embodying the spirit of this movement is Greysen Malmstrom, whose experiences in ISU’s College of Technology illustrate the transformative power of vocational education.

Starting Strong: A Commitment to Welding

After graduating high school, Malmstrom took the bold step to enroll in ISU’s welding technology program in Fall 2023. This decision marked the beginning of an adventure that would not only enhance his technical skills but also bolster his self-confidence. The welding program at ISU is lauded for its hands-on training, exceptional instructors, and state-of-the-art facilities. Reflecting on his journey, Malmstrom said, “The education was awesome. My instructors were top-notch, and the facility is amazing. I have never felt more confident or capable when it comes to welding.”

Such high praise speaks volumes about the nurturing environment within the College of Technology, where students are encouraged to excel both academically and personally.

Beyond Welding: Exploring Entrepreneurship

While Malmstrom excelled in welding and completed the program in Spring 2025, his thirst for knowledge led him to pursue further education. He enrolled in the Small Business and Entrepreneurship program, eager to expand his skill set and learn how to run his own business. This shift not only illustrates his ambition but also highlights the versatility of CTE programs that allow students to explore various career paths.

Duane Rawlings of the Idaho State University College of Technology remarked, “Greysen wanted to learn more about running his own business, so he enrolled in the Small Business and Entrepreneurship program. BPA allows him to further develop leadership skills and be more involved on the ISU campus.” This involvement is vital, as it fosters a sense of community and equips students with additional skills crucial for their future careers.

Engagement in Leadership with BPA

Malmstrom’s educational journey reached a new pinnacle when he became a member of the Business Professionals of America (BPA), a national organization dedicated to developing career and leadership skills among students. Through BPA, he not only sharpened his professional acumen but also became an active participant in campus life and local business initiatives. Such engagement further supports the mission of CTE in preparing students for meaningful careers, as well-rounded individuals are better equipped to meet the demands of the workforce.

A Proud Representation at the State Capitol

One notable highlight of Malmstrom’s experience was his representation of the College of Technology at the Idaho State Capitol. It was during this significant event that Governor Brad Little signed the official proclamation declaring February as CTE Month in Idaho. Malmstrom’s participation served as a testament to the vital role CTE plays in preparing students like himself for the demands of Idaho’s workforce. Through this experience, he articulated, “It was an honor to represent Idaho State University College of Technology,” showcasing his pride and commitment to his educational institution.

Impact of CTE on Students and Workforce Development

Greysen Malmstrom’s journey illustrates how Career and Technical Education programs provide essential skills, personal growth, and opportunities for students. His story is a microcosm of a larger narrative about how CTE is vital for shaping Idaho’s workforce. By equipping individuals with practical skills and the confidence to succeed, such programs strengthen not only the future of individual students but also the overall economy of the state.

Idaho State University’s College of Technology exemplifies the potential of CTE to transform lives and build a robust workforce ready to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities. Malmstrom’s evolving journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the crucial role education plays in personal and professional development for students across Idaho.
