The Harmonious Haven of DJ Samantha Michelle: A Glimpse into Her New York City Sanctuary
A Melody of Global Influences
DJ Samantha Michelle, a Toronto-born music producer, has carved a niche for herself not only through her electrifying beats but also in her artfully designed New York City apartment. Drawing inspiration from her eclectic background, Samantha’s home reflects the diverse influences that shape her electronic dance music. Having opened for renowned acts like Cascada and Galantis, she’s also graced iconic festivals like Burning Man. With a notable career that includes events for industry giants like Dolce & Gabbana and The Wall Street Journal, Samantha’s remarkable journey in music is beautifully mirrored in her vibrant aesthetic choices at home.
Roots in Greenwich Village
Samantha first moved into a quaint apartment in Greenwich Village during her time at New York University. After graduation, she held on to her 900-square-foot unit despite temporary stints living in Los Angeles and London. It was in New York, however, where she felt the pull of creative energy—the heartbeat of her musical aspirations. A serendipitous meeting with a fellow resident led her to discover her current abode, igniting her passion for homeownership.
“I had been living in a different unit in the building… I met the previous owner, who was a very prolific interiors icon,” she recalls. This encounter in April 2023 marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in her life.
From Dream to Reality
When she learned that the previous owner’s unit was available for sale, Samantha didn’t hesitate. She described the aesthetic allure of the space, having seen it featured in Vogue and Architectural Digest, saying, “Oh my god, this is my dream apartment.” Transitioning to her new 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom residence, she transformed it into a creative haven—redesigning virtually every aspect of the apartment, save for a few preserved details.
A Home Under Renovation
Samantha undertook an ambitious renovation project with a commitment that lasted nearly two years. Balancing her busy touring schedule with renovation management proved challenging. “I’ve been traveling pretty consistently… trying to manage a renovation remotely was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” she explains. Yet, the resulting space speaks volumes of her efforts.
Eclectic Aesthetic and Cozy Sanctuary
The overall style of her apartment exudes warmth, comfort, and a harmonious blend of global influences. Influenced by European aesthetics, particularly French and English designs, her decor features rich textiles and jewel tones. “There’s damask everywhere, which is my favorite textile,” she says, painting a picture of the lavish textures that envelope her home.
Michelle’s color palette is steeped in deep hues—crimson reds, purples, and emerald greens bring life to her sanctuary. Plush walls and surfaces invite touch, aiming for an immersive and cozy environment. Working closely with interior designer Jacques Dinel, they harmonized her vision with practical renovations, ensuring every corner was filled with her signature flair.
Defining Spaces: Work Meets Leisure
Her apartment isn’t just a home; it’s a multi-functional space. The ground level is often a collaborative haven where Samantha hosts music collaborators and team members, allowing for creativity to flourish in a productive setting. In contrast, the upstairs is designated for private access, embodying the artist’s need for solitude and introspection.
“Downstairs is more for work and business… upstairs is private access only.” This duality reflects her lifestyle—where her creativity meets her work environment amid the hustle and bustle of New York City.
The Music Room: A Creative Cocoon
The music room stands out as a personal sanctuary for Samantha. Describing it as “a big, purple, plush, magical, dark cave,” she embraces a space rich in creativity. The striking blue onyx countertop is matched by mahogany walls, all framed in thick damask panels, serving both aesthetic and acoustic functions.
“I had a plant medicine journey, and suddenly I saw everything in damask and purple,” she recounts, blending spirituality with artistic vision during the design process.
Personal Touches and Sentimental Value
Amid her modern studio equipment, an antique red mahogany piano gifted by her mother imbues the space with emotional depth. “It’s the most sentimental item in my sanctuary,” she shares. This piano symbolizes her musical journey and family bond—a creative outlet she cherishes.
Samantha’s creative haven is more than a living space; it is an embodiment of her identity as an artist. Each element tells a story, a reflection of her travels, collaborations, and personal experiences.
A Nurturing Environment for Inspiration
Samantha describes her bathroom as “my place of sanctuary,” where every detail—pink and gold hues, steam shower, and spacious bathtub—offers an escape from her hectic life. It becomes a restful retreat where she rejuvenates after demanding tours, indulging in soothing rituals that refresh both body and mind.
A Lasting Commitment to the Arts
Looking to the future, Samantha envisions her apartment as “my forever home.” Her creative sanctuary will continue to evolve along with her artistic journey. “I’m definitely strapped in and committed to a life in the creative arts,” she affirms, embracing her identity and responsibilities as an artist, all while remaining anchored to the vibrancy and energy of New York City.
In every corner of her home, DJ Samantha Michelle showcases the essence of her musical identity—a richly layered experience that resonates with her global influences and personal stories. Each design choice echoes her journey, inviting all who step into her world to feel enveloped by creativity, warmth, and inspiration.
