Sara Landry: The Rise of Hard Dance in the American Music Scene

A Debutante at Coachella

Sara Landry, an emerging name in the electronic music scene, likened her experience at Coachella 2025 to that of a debutante stepping into the spotlight. “I joked to my team that I felt like a debutante,” she says, emphasizing the significance of her performance at this iconic festival. Unlike her previous gigs, this event was her first major crossover opportunity, introducing her hard dance sound to a diverse audience beyond the typical dance and hard dance enthusiasts.

A Dazzling Presentation

Instead of the traditional gown, Landry graced the stage in a striking metallic bodysuit that echoed the energy of her set. She didn’t just perform; she electrified the massive crowd at the Sahara tent, driving pulsating beats that reverberated through the festival grounds. As if the main stage wasn’t enough, she also DJ’d the after-party for Lady Gaga’s headlining show and coordinated an unannounced back-to-back-to-back set named “Blood Oath” with fellow female artists on the experimental dance focused Do Lab stage.

Journey Through Music

Her journey to this moment is as multifaceted as her performances. Born in California, Landry grew up in Texas before relocating to Amsterdam, where she immersed herself in the vibrant electronic music landscape. She made a name for herself in the post-pandemic dance scene, producing and performing at Austin’s warehouse raves in the late 2010s. Her introduction to the hard dance genre came through influential labels like Perc Trax, as well as during her transformative experience at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) in 2019.

The Evolution of Techno

Techno, which originated in Detroit during the 1980s, has branched into various subgenres like hard techno, schranz, and gabber. In the coming decades, these forms found a nurturing ground within the underground scenes of Europe. Fast forward to today, and Sara Landry is leading the charge for the next generation of artists who are passionate about these sounds. “Now me and the DJs I came up with in the European touring circuit are all playing Insomniac festivals and these large events in the States,” she shares.

Her unique position as a “homegrown American act” has allowed her to break new ground. In 2024, she made history as the first hard dance artist to perform on Tomorrowland’s main stage, cementing her role as a tastemaker in the evolving music landscape.

Hard Dance Takes Center Stage

The resurgence and popularity of hard dance cannot be understated, with platforms like SoundCloud identifying hard techno, hardtekk, and schranz as actively thriving genres. According to Splice’s 2025 genre report, hard dance ranks among the fastest-growing styles within the electronic music community. Landry attributes some of this growth to the accessibility of creative tools.

The Influence of Platforms

“Splice has a lot to do with it,” she notes, referring to the sample pack marketplace that has empowered young producers, many of whom are unaware of the historical distinctions among various subgenres of hard dance. “There are five or six different things that fall under hard dance that are now all mixed together,” she explains. This blending might not sit well with some purists, but Landry sees it as an exciting creative evolution.

Upcoming Projects and Collaborations

Currently, Landry is working on a plethora of new tracks, gearing up for her debut at the Ultra Music Festival in March. She plans to return to Coachella in April for a more expansive edition of Blood Oath, where she aims to bring together a lineup of both established and rising producers who share her vision for the future of American electronic music.

A Focus on Creativity

Despite the evolving landscape, Landry maintains a focus on what truly matters: the music itself. “We don’t really give a s–t what it’s called,” she laughs, emphasizing her commitment to creating “cool and interesting music.”
