Goldrush Music Festival: A Return to Its True Home
The annual Goldrush Music Festival made a triumphant return to its beloved venue, the Rawhide Western Town & Event Center, in Chandler, Arizona, bringing together music lovers for an unforgettable experience. This year marked my first venture into this event, and I couldn’t have been more excited about diving into a new festival environment.
Discovering a New Scene
With nearly a decade of attending dance music festivals, I’ve become selective about my choices. Southern California offers an incredible array of shows, yet I felt the urge to explore new frontiers. I had heard nothing but positive feedback about the Arizona music community, renowned for its kindness and acceptance. Having only briefly visited Phoenix’s Park ‘N Rave and celebrated at Tempe’s Sunbar, I was eager for a full festival experience.
The Venue: Rawhide Western Town
When Goldrush returned to Rawhide Western Town from September 12-13, it was the perfect opportunity to embrace the festival’s Western theme. This nostalgic location required minimal transformation to accommodate the music festival atmosphere, allowing attendees to feel instantly immersed in its wild-west charm. Numerous small buildings dotted the area, functioning as side stages, saloons, and photo ops that added to the festival’s unique experience.
Exploring the Festival Grounds
As I entered Goldrush, my first stop was the main stage, Golden Gorge. The ambiance was infectious, and the space allowed for easy movement and dance. Excited festival-goers complemented my outfit and traded kandi, welcoming me into this vibrant community with open arms. The energy rose as William Black took the stage, signaling the start of my musical journey.
The VIP area was an oasis, featuring a beauty bar, air-conditioned restrooms, exclusive viewing platforms, and a plethora of freebies. The viewing platforms, particularly at Pioneer Peak, provided a stunning vantage point, and I appreciated the choice to experience a more elevated ambiance away from the GA crowd.
A Western-Themed Experience
Strolling through Rawhide further emphasized the festival’s effect, taking me back to an exploration of the Wild West. The venue melded seamlessly with the festival’s identity, bringing the theme to life. Diverse activations, like the Jeeter booth—complete with a jail prop for fun photos—offered a glimpse into the local culture. The Dusty Disco, presented by Red Bull, featured vibrant photography opportunities, making it a highlight for those wanting to capture every moment.
A Musical Journey Like No Other
Goldrush’s lineup was a bass lover’s dream—a voyage through melodic dubstep, house, and drum and bass. With an astonishing roster, headliners included heavyweights like Excision, Space Laces, and Dillon Francis. Getter’s Resurrection set was undoubtedly a highlight, rekindling nostalgic memories with a mix of dubstep and trap tracks.
Saturday brought exhilarating acts such as Benny Benassi and Major Lazer, but the real crowning jewel was the anticipated ILLENIUM b2b Zeds Dead. Their dynamic set blended emotional melodies with energetic drops, captivating the audience throughout their performance. The synergy between ILLENIUM’s ethereal style and Zeds Dead’s heavier tones created a thrilling crescendo, binding the crowd in an electrifying atmosphere.
The Community Atmosphere
What stood out to me during the festival was the palpable sense of community. For every set I enjoyed, I encountered individuals eager to share good vibes, reinforcing the idea that the Arizona rave scene had a warmth that resonated. The lack of overcrowding allowed for easy navigation and brought a relaxed quality, facilitating conversations with fellow attendees and artists alike.
An Overall Experience to Remember
The Goldrush Music Festival was more than just a music event; it was a journey into the heart of dance music within a uniquely themed environment. The event was a perfect marriage of dynamic performers and an adventurous venue, demonstrating how much thought and effort went into creating the ideal backdrop for the festival’s spirit.
Outside of the excitement, one concern was the dust that lingered, but I appreciated the venue’s charm and hope future editions can find a way to mitigate that inconvenience. Overall, my experience at Goldrush reinforced my belief in exploring new musical territories, and I left Arizona with a full heart, ready for my next adventure.
