This specific pacemaker is equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, which is designed to operate efficiently over several years on minimal power.

Typically, BLE has a range of about 10 to 15 feet. However, Kennedy noted that by incorporating signal amplifiers and using high-gain antennas, the effective detection radius can be dramatically expanded to several hundred feet. In practical testing, Kennedy was able to extend this range to nearly 800 feet using a modified non-commercial drone, showcasing the potential of this technology in search efforts.

Aerial Support and Tactical Applications

To enhance their search for Guthrie, law enforcement mounted the signal sniffer on a helicopter, flying at low altitudes over areas of interest. This aerial approach is beneficial as it provides a broad overview of the landscape, potentially narrowing down the search area. Kennedy remarked that while helicopters can be used effectively, drones are typically more efficient due to their ability to cover greater distances more rapidly. They can also fly lower without the interference that may be caused by buildings and other structures.

According to Kennedy, the immediate use of the helicopter served as a temporary measure. The ultimate goal is to develop a drone fleet capable of covering wider areas comprehensively. He indicated that if law enforcement could mobilize around 50 to 60 drones, each equipped with signal sniffers, they could drastically reduce the search time. This logistics aspect emphasizes the integration of technology in modern investigations, where manpower and advanced tools work in tandem for maximum effectiveness.

For instance, if more resources are allocated, it might be possible to cover a radius of 120 square miles in just a few days—cutting down what might have taken weeks into mere days.
