What to Expect

The outreach event offers critical resources for all attendees. Staff from the health departments will be on-site to assist with medication disposal, ensuring safe practices in disposing of potentially harmful substances. Attendees can also take advantage of free blood pressure screenings to monitor cardiovascular health, along with educational materials that promote general wellness.

In addition, the Get Covered Illinois Insurance Navigator will be present, providing guidance on health insurance options. This is particularly beneficial for individuals unsure of how to navigate their health coverage or looking to explore new plans.

Engaging Youth: Heart Health Tips

February aligns with American Heart Month, a perfect time for the Henry and Stark County Health Departments to engage with local schools. RaeAnn Tucker, the Director of Health Promotion, has been visiting classrooms, imparting essential heart health lessons that students can carry into adulthood. The program aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Children learn practical habits such as:

  • Regular Exercise: Encouraging physical activity sets the stage for an active lifestyle.
  • Healthy Eating: Understanding nutrition helps them make informed food choices.
  • Adequate Sleep: Emphasizing the importance of rest for overall health.
  • Routine Check-ups: Teaching children to be proactive about visiting healthcare providers.
  • Hydration: Explaining the role of water in maintaining bodily functions.
  • Positivity and Kindness: Fostering good mental health as part of overall well-being.

Heart-Smart Tips for Residents

In recognition of American Heart Month, residents are encouraged to adopt heart-smart habits. The health departments have outlined several strategies for improving heart health:

  • Don’t Skip Breakfast: Starting the day with a meal might help reduce the risk of heart complications later in life.
  • Limit Sugar Intake: Reducing sweets can help with weight management and make room for more nutritious foods.
  • Meet the “Bs”: Incorporate foods high in vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid to support heart health.
  • Manage Stress: Stress can impact heart health, so finding ways to cope is vital.
  • Consult about Aspirin Use: If applicable, discussing aspirin as part of a heart health strategy with a healthcare provider can be beneficial.
  • Quit Smoking: The benefits of quitting smoking are substantial and can significantly lower the risk of heart disease.

CPR Certification Classes Offered

In addition to health screenings and educational programs, the health departments will provide monthly CPR certification classes. With heart disease being the predominant health issue in the U.S., these classes equip participants with the skills needed to respond effectively in emergencies. Classes occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Health Department offices.

National Cancer Prevention Awareness Month

February also marks National Cancer Prevention Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of lifestyle choices in cancer prevention. Research indicates that over 40% of cancer cases can be tied directly to preventable factors such as smoking and obesity.

Key Actions for Reducing Cancer Risk

  1. Maintain Healthy Weight: Keeping weight in check lowers the likelihood of developing various cancers.
  2. Avoid Tobacco Products: Quitting smoking drastically reduces cancer risks.
  3. Sun Protection: Proper sun safety practices can prevent skin cancers.
  4. Get Immunized: Vaccines can protect against specific cancers caused by viruses.
  5. Routine Screening: Regular check-ups and screenings can lead to early detection.
  6. Know Your Family History: Understanding genetic risks allows for better monitoring and preventive measures.

Get Covered Illinois Navigators Available

As part of their outreach efforts, health navigators will be available in various locations, including the Kewanee YMCA and Grow Ministries in Cambridge. They assist individuals looking to set up or modify health insurance plans. Serving as a resource, they guide individuals through eligibility checks for subsidies and Medicaid, exposing them to affordable health coverage options. Various life events can trigger eligibility outside the usual enrollment periods, making navigating health insurance crucial.

The month of February serves as an opportunity for proactive health measures within the Kewanee community. From heart health education to cancer prevention awareness and access to insurance options, this outreach initiative promotes well-being on multiple levels. Whether attending the YMCA event or participating in heart health programs, residents are encouraged to take advantage of these resources for better health outcomes.
