Exploring the Pulse of Electronic Music: Illenium’s Revolutionary Odyssey

Imagine a sound that grips you, vibrating through your very core – that’s how Illenium’s latest single, “Slave to the Rhythm,” kicks off. The song bursts from the speakers with an urgency that can only be described as breathless. With its pulsating kick-drum that mirrors a racing heartbeat, listeners are drawn into a whirlwind of sound. With кожей rattling bass drops that hit as hard as a falling anvil, it’s an auditory experience designed to electrify crowds.

Frontman Oli Sykes of Bring Me the Horizon lends his guttural growl to the mix, declaring, “There’s no escape! Now you’re a slave to the rhythm.” This track, which is a standout from Illenium’s new album, “Odyssey,” showcases a special fusion of electronic music and high-energy metalcore, a daring synergy that captures the essence of Illenium’s artistic evolution.

In a luxurious Wynn Las Vegas suite, Illenium (Nicholas Miller) reflects on the wild creative journey that led to this track. Accompanied by his wife, Lara, and his management team, his enthusiasm is palpable as he describes “Slave to the Rhythm” as something unlike anything he has ever produced. “That is a crazy song; I’ve never made a song that crazy,” he admits, hinting at the explosive potential this track holds for his audience—especially live.

Illenium is no stranger to groundbreaking performances. He made history five years ago as the first electronic artist to headline a stadium, opening Allegiant Stadium with a spectacular Fourth of July show. Now, he’s poised to redefine live performance once again with his upcoming residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. His creative approach this time is uniquely forward-thinking—he’s crafting an entire album inspired by the immersive technological marvel that the Sphere represents.

“How do I even explain this?” Illenium asks, reflecting on how “Odyssey” came together in a non-traditional fashion. Typically, he would create music first, followed by developing visuals for a corresponding show. But with the Sphere’s advanced requirements for visual storytelling, Illenium pivoted. Working through a storyboard on a long flight with collaborators, he experienced a creative spark that altered the trajectory of his project. “I got super excited about the storyboard we wrote,” he recounts. This experience not only inspired him to create the album but provided a narrative foundation that guides his live show.

At the core of Illenium’s performance is an innovative approach to sound design. He marvels at the Sphere’s directional audio capabilities, imagining the fun he can have manipulating sound across the venue—from soaking the balcony in sound waves to enveloping those up close. “There’s so much fun stuff I can do that I’ve never been able to do in terms of performing,” he exclaims, eager for the possibilities this venue offers.

Illenium’s excitement reflects more than just the technical aspects of performance; it’s deeply tied to his artistic vision. After touring the Sphere while it was still under construction, he felt a surge of inspiration. “Creatively, we knew that it was going to be super special,” he recalls. Having experienced other performances at the venue, he was struck by the innovative potential it housed. “For me, music is a huge release and a huge escape,” he reflects, noting how the immersive experience can elevate the audience’s journey through sound.

The concept behind “Odyssey” expands further as he elaborates on the album’s narrative. “It’s very much a story, the whole hour-and-a-half show,” Illenium explains. He focuses on the duality of light and dark, exploring themes of beauty amidst struggle. This thematic concentration serves as a backbone for both the album and the live show, creating a cohesive experience that resonates on multiple levels.

Illenium’s artistic transformation is evident in “Odyssey,” which has garnered attention for its eclectic range of collaborators, including names like Kid Cudi and Ellie Goulding. This collaboration highlights the album’s ambitious scope, marrying various genres and styles to create a fully realized electronic soundscape. “I love the roller coaster ride,” he says, inviting listeners on a journey that ebbs and flows between serenity and chaos.

In partnership with Berlin-based studio Woodblock, Illenium explores new visual dimensions for the music. “It’s a lot of VR,” he shares about his recent work, indicating a blend of technology and art that enhances the album’s experience. Using a rough setup of the Sphere’s audio system for practice, he fine-tunes every detail, ensuring the live show will encapsulate the emotions behind each track.

This year also marks a significant milestone for Illenium as he celebrates the tenth anniversary of his debut album, “Ashes.” His journey into music began with a love for epic soundtracks found in ski and snowboard movies. “I just got obsessed with music,” he reminisces as he reflects on how that passion fueled his desire to produce music. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a full-blown career that would surpass many of his early dreams.

Illenium’s rise to stardom can be attributed not only to his musical talent but also to his emotional connection with fans. His lyrics often delve into feelings of pain and reflection, creating an atmosphere of empathy within his music. “I want to write an album that makes you have a moment that you remember in a really positive light,” he asserts, ensuring that every listener can find solace in his sound. This emotive quality sets him apart, making his music both memorable and deeply impactful.
