The Global Summit: A Collaborative Approach to AI Transformation
On March 12–13, WSU will engage national technology leaders, higher education innovators, faculty, policymakers, and students in its inaugural Global Summit. This gathering serves as a stage to delve into the profound implications of AI in academia and to discuss the critical question: What can we do at WSU?
President Betsy Cantwell articulates the ethos of this initiative: “When higher education faces structural change, we choose to lead.” The summit aims to unite the community to discuss the evolving nature of learning, research, and public service in the age of AI.
This is a unique opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to explore how they can collectively shape the future of education at WSU, aligning with the university’s mission as a land-grant institution.
Rethinking Education and Operations: Insights from Keynote Speakers
One of the featured panelists at the summit is Sally Amoruso, Chief Partner Officer at EAB. In the Excellence Exchange session, she emphasizes the importance of rethinking educational operations in light of AI advancements. “AI should not merely be added to existing systems,” she observes, but instead should prompt a reevaluation of teaching methods, advising structures, and research methodologies.
Amoruso introduces the concept of the “J-curve” in AI adoption: an initial dip in productivity might occur, followed by a peak of growth after systems are redesigned around new technologies. “Meaningful gains follow redesign, not quick pilots,” she insists, signaling that WSU and other institutions must think critically about their approaches to AI.
Harnessing AI for Innovative Research and Productivity
Doug Burger, a Technical Fellow and Corporate Vice President at Microsoft, will also participate in the summit, offering insights into the accelerating role of AI in research and productivity transformation. He likens the current technological shift to past revolutions in industrial and information technology, calling this the “intelligence revolution.”
Burger emphasizes the unique position universities hold. Although they have a reputation for being slow to adapt, this deliberateness can serve as a strength. Universities can provide the context, ethical grounding, and rigor needed during rapid technological advancements, enabling them to lead in reimagining curricula and advancing research.
In discussing the vast opportunities this moment presents, Burger challenges attendees to envision what a future shaped by AI will look like — underscoring the role of higher education in guiding ethical discussions around these emerging technologies.
Designing a Human-Centered Educational Future
The vision for WSU extends beyond technology integration; it revolves around enhancing access and engagement for students. Chancellor Dave Cillay articulates this aim succinctly: “Technology should increase access and support for students, freeing up time for mentorship and deeper engagement.”
WSU’s Global Summit serves as a springboard for actionable insights. By convening various stakeholders, the summit seeks to craft a strategic response that aligns technology with improved student outcomes — reshaping not just operational efficiency, but also enriching the learning experience.
With discussions slated to address elements like transforming advising models, evolving curriculum, and streamlining administrative workflows, the summit signifies a pivotal step in molding WSU’s path forward.
A Preview of Dynamic Summit Sessions
As part of the summit, a plethora of sessions will tackle critical themes related to AI in education. Featured presentations will include perspectives from leaders at tech giants like Microsoft, Adobe, and Google as well as insights from peer institutions like Arizona State University and Georgia Tech.
Panels will explore:
- Building the Future-Ready WSU: Transformative insights from global tech leaders on emerging technologies and the skills needed for the future workforce.
- Architects of Online Excellence: Principles of creating impactful digital learning experiences, aimed at informing WSU’s approach.
- The Student Blueprint: Firsthand opinions from students about their experiences with the tools and practices that have enhanced their academic journeys.
These discussions are designed to be interactive, allowing both in-person and virtual attendees to contribute to conversations about proactive strategies for embracing change.
Innovation in Action: Networking Opportunities
The first day of the summit will culminate in the “Innovation in Action” networking reception. This event offers attendees a hands-on experience in WSU’s “Technology Test Kitchen,” where they can interact with cutting-edge tools that are redefining the educational landscape.
Through a combination of expertise and collaborative discourse, the Global Summit aims to not only explore the transformations AI brings but also to set forth a clear direction for WSU as an educational leader in this new era.
In the world of higher education, the question is no longer if AI will change the landscape, but rather how institutions will respond to this evolution. Washington State University is poised to define how this technological transformation will shape its future, ensuring that it enhances access, deepens learning, and advances research for generations to come.
