With momentum building and a growing global presence, MANSA is quickly becoming a name to watch in electronic music. Following the viral success of “Midnight On My Mind” and the release of her latest single “Car Crash,” her sound continues to evolve—balancing emotion, intensity, and dancefloor impact.
We had the pleasure of catching up with MANSA to discuss her breakthrough moment, her creative process, and what lies ahead as she continues to carve out her unique space within the music scene.
1. Thanks for doing this interview with us, MANSA! Can you share an introduction for our readers on how they might know you and a bit about your background?
I’m MANSA, a DJ and producer originally from Singapore. Many people may have discovered me through my recent releases, especially on platforms like Instagram and Spotify. My music generally fits into the bass house genre, but it also focuses heavily on emotional depth. I aim to create tracks that demand a visceral response—not just physical, but emotional as well. I began by producing and sharing my ideas online, and over time, that has blossomed into a growing audience. Now, I’m excited to translate that energy from the digital space to live stages across the globe.
2. Your breakout hit “Midnight On My Mind” went viral. Can you tell us how that happened?
“Midnight On My Mind” was one of those special tracks that connected with listeners almost instantly. I experimented with short-form content on social media to test various hooks and moments, and it quickly gained traction, accumulating millions of views, impressive streaming numbers, and endorsements from artists I admired growing up. It’s just been surreal—a classic “pinch me” moment! I believe its engagement stemmed from its simple yet emotional core, which resonated well with listeners. If you can evoke a feeling within the first few seconds, people are likely to stick around.
3. Your latest release, ‘Car Crash,’ has just launched. What kind of vibe can listeners expect from this track?
“Car Crash” dives into a darker, more intense vibe. It encapsulates the idea of something being both addictive and destructive simultaneously. While it still retains elements of dance music, it feels more cinematic—less focused on melody and more on creating a powerful impact.
4. Do you prefer live performances or producing behind the scenes? What’s been a favorite moment for you so far?
Both experiences offer completely different highs. Producing is where everything originates; it requires deep introspection and an obsessive focus. Performing is where it all comes to life. There’s an incomparable thrill in hearing a crowd react to something you created in your own space. Just two weeks ago, I performed “Midnight On My Mind” live, and witnessing the audience already sing along to the lyrics was surreal. That’s when you truly realize that your music transcends beyond yourself.
5. How does the dance music scene in Southeast Asia compare to what you’ve experienced elsewhere?
Southeast Asia is buzzing with energy, but it’s still developing in terms of its infrastructure and visibility compared to more established markets like the US or Europe. In countries like the US, there’s a more robust touring circuit and a deeper cultural integration of dance music. In Southeast Asia, while audiences are highly engaged, the scene lacks the same consistency and opportunities. However, there’s a palpable excitement, as artists from this region are beginning to break through on international platforms.
6. There’s been an increase in female DJs on lineups globally. How has this shift affected your career?
It’s undeniably opened up more visibility and opportunities for women in the industry. However, I strive to be recognized for my music above all. My aim is not just to be identified as a “female DJ” but to be acknowledged as one of the strongest artists, period. The shift in representation is crucial, but what really matters long-term is consistency and the quality of the work produced.
7. What can fans look forward to from you in the future? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
Fans can expect a lot more music and performances! I’m dedicated to maintaining a steady stream of releases and transforming this online buzz into real-world engagement through touring and festivals. I’m also working on some collaborations that I’m incredibly excited about. This year is all about scaling up and inviting my fans along for the ride on this journey.
From her viral breakout to the deeper nuances of her latest track, MANSA is already showcasing her versatility. With more music and performances on the way, it’s clear that she’s focused on forging her unique identity rather than merely following trends. This journey is definitely one to watch!
