Is Charlotte Emerging as the Hub for Electronic Dance Music?

The Evolution of DJ Odi and the Charlotte EDM Scene

A Night Behind the Turntables

On a brisk February evening at Crown Station Pub in Elizabeth, DJ Odi, known for his mastery of drum-and-bass, commands the atmosphere with energetic beats blasting at 175 BPM. The crowd, a vibrant mix of about 150 enthusiasts, pulses to the rhythm, immersed in the soundscape that Odi skillfully crafts. Suddenly, chaos ensues as a couple of overzealous patrons collide with his DJ table, sending the music into an abrupt silence. With a quick shout to the crowd to “take a step back,” Odi resets the beat, re-engaging the audience. In this moment of dissonance—part frustration, part exhilaration—the electric energy of the dance floor is intensified, reminiscent of EDM’s roots in nightlife unpredictability.

Carlos “Odi” Castillo: From NYC to Charlotte

Carlos Castillo, a.k.a. DJ Odi, embarked on a new chapter in January when he relocated from the vibrant streets of New York City to the burgeoning EDM landscape in Charlotte, North Carolina. Recognizing Charlotte’s potential, Odi notes, “It is one of the most powerful major-micro markets.” This sentiment reflects the growing influence of electronic dance music in an area traditionally overshadowed by cities like New York and Los Angeles.

Over pints at Jack Beagle’s in NoDa, Odi discusses the college scene surrounding Charlotte, emphasizing the cultural melting pot it provides for musical innovation. With four colleges within a short drive, he sees a plethora of opportunities for cross-pollination in music styles and genres.

The Roots of Charlotte’s EDM Scene

Charlotte’s EDM scene hasn’t always thrived as it does today. It traces its roots to the early ’90s, when a singular venue, Mythos, hosted legends like Sasha and Digweed, laying the groundwork for future electronic artists. In those days, a more unified club culture existed—a lifestyle intertwined with music, fashion, and community. As Andy Kastanas, a stalwart in the DJ scene, reminisces, “It created a vibe.” However, over time, the scene diversified, fracturing into myriad styles and venues.

Today, Charlotte boasts a variety of spaces—from traditional dance clubs like Halo to more eclectic environments like the Neighborhood Theatre, hosting events under banners such as Mindelixir’s Bass Church, which champions local and national talent alike. The evolution from a single club dominance to a multi-faceted ecosystem speaks volumes to the resilience and adaptability of the local music community.

A Community of Innovators

DJ Odi isn’t alone in his venture. The city has attracted a mix of seasoned DJs and producers eager to contribute to its growth. David Heartbreak, a moombahton pioneer from Brooklyn, and renowned house DJ Peter Presta add to the vibrant mix, each offering their unique sounds to the burgeoning Charlotte EDM scene. Presta’s decision to move here five months ago is rooted in the realization that “there are clubs here that are playing underground music,” a testament to Charlotte’s diverse music tapestry.

Heartbreak, who aims to shape Charlotte’s EDM identity, highlights the challenges of maintaining a consistent base of support as new faces enter and exit the scene. “It’s hard to build a foundation for people who come and go,” he acknowledges, pointing to the necessity for unity in fostering a sustainable community.

The Resurgence of Drum-and-Bass

Among these innovators is Odi, who recently kicked off his monthly event, Konkrete Jungle, at Crown Station Pub—an extension of the legendary NYC event of the same name. His mission aims to bring both nostalgia and fresh energy to enthusiasts of the genre. Odi’s versatility shines through as he shifts from techno-influenced beats to more organic, bouncy tracks, bridging the gap between generations of EDM lovers.

Drum-and-bass, once a thriving genre synonymous with the energetic rave culture of the ’90s, is experiencing a renaissance, largely fueled by nostalgic clubbers who now seek the energetic sound that initially captivated them. Odi explains, “It’s always a party; it’s not a listening party,” inviting newcomers to experience the pulse of the dance floor.

Personal Journey and Musical Roots

Beyond the decks, the story of Carlos Castillo, DJ Odi, is one marked by resilience. Growing up in Harlem, music was always part of his life—his father was a bassist with a Latin-jazz radio show, and his mother was a salsa dancer. A tragic accident at a young age led to a lengthy recovery, during which Odi honed his skills in DJing. These formative years shaped his artistry and passion for music, leading him to blend hip-hop and drum-and-bass into a genre he helped pioneer: hipstep.

Despite facing numerous personal challenges, including turbulent teenage years, Odi capitalized on his experiences to propel himself into the world of music. His journey from a latchkey kid in Manhattan to a respected figure in the EDM scene is filled with creativity and determination.

Building a Legacy in Charlotte

Having played a significant role in both the New York and emerging Charlotte music scenes, DJ Odi seeks not only to make his mark but also to support the growth of Charlotte’s EDM landscape. He emphasizes the importance of community and experiential learning, imparting wisdom gained over decades of experience. “With Konkrete Jungle, Spencer and I are trying to give people who grew up loving raves and drum-and-bass shows the opportunity to go out again,” he says.

As Odi prepares for his next set, he’s not just spinning tracks; he’s weaving a narrative of culture, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of passion. Charlotte may be a newer canvas for him, but the beats resonate with a universal language—one that knows no bounds.

Upcoming Events

For those eager to experience the energy DJ Odi and his fellow innovators bring to the Charlotte scene, mark your calendars: KonKrete Jungle takes place with Klute and The_Sheist on March 9 at Dharma Lounge, offering a perfect blend of familiar faces and fresh sounds for all EDM enthusiasts.

To keep up with Charlotte’s constantly evolving EDM community, venues like Dharma continue to lead the charge in showcasing talent and fostering an artistic environment.
