Midwest Friends Fest: A Celebration of Musical Diversity
The highly anticipated Midwest Friends Fest returns this week from May 28-30 at the iconic Southgate House Revival, and this year, it’s poised to be bigger and better than ever. With the exciting addition of an outdoor stage, the festival will feature a total of four stages, showcasing a vibrant array of bands and musicians spanning an impressive mix of genres.
Festival Vision: Embracing Musical Diversity
Festival organizer Jared Bowers expresses his vision for the event, emphasizing its purpose: to offer attendees a taste of everything the Midwest music scene has to offer. “We’re really trying hard to bring together some of the disparate scenes happening in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky,” he explains.
From the soulful melodies of the singer-songwriter scene to the pulsating beats of electronic music, and from the raw energy of punk basement shows to the innovative sounds of the DIY culture, Bowers aims to celebrate every aspect. “We love all of them equally, and we wanted to bring them together to celebrate Cincinnati music while also welcoming bands who have never performed here before.” This commitment to inclusivity makes the festival a unique melting pot of sounds and styles.
An Overwhelming Response
The enthusiasm around the festival is palpable. Within just 56 hours of releasing musician applications, Bowers and his team were inundated with over 900 submissions. “It was terrifying, but really what a dream come true to have that many people interested in what we’re doing,” he says. Sifting through the numerous applications was both thrilling and challenging, transforming the selection process into one of the most enjoyable yet difficult experiences for Bowers and his team.
Discovering New Music
With the venue’s stages conveniently located just a two-minute walk apart, the festival is designed for musical exploration. Attendees can effortlessly hop from one performance to another, ensuring they stumble upon unique talent with each step. Bowers emphasizes the festival’s goal: to foster a newfound appreciation for DIY and local music. “We want you to walk away with a new favorite band. Like, we just want you to leave smiling and excited about local music and all of the amazing DIY things happening around us.”
The Lineup: A Sneak Peek
This year’s lineup promises to be an eclectic mix, reflecting the rich tapestry of talent in the region. While the complete list is sure to be a surprise, festival-goers can expect a wide range of performers, each bringing their unique flair to the stage.
