Ninajirachi Dominates at the 2026 AIR Awards
With a remarkable five wins at the 2026 AIR Awards, presented on July 31 at the Adelaide Town Hall, Ninajirachi has proven to be an unstoppable force in the Australian music scene. Known for her vibrant EDM tracks, the artist, whose real name is Nina Wilson, made headlines for her various accolades throughout the evening.
Major Wins for Ninajirachi
Among the prestigious awards Ninajirachi took home were those for Independent Album, Independent Producer, and Best Independent Electronic Album or EP for her much-acclaimed album I Love My Computer. Equally impressive was her breakthrough single, “iPod Touch,” which clinched the awards for Best Independent Electronic Single and Independent Song of the Year.
Ninajirachi’s collaborative spirit shines through in her work, as seen in her acceptance speech where she reflected on the creation process of “iPod Touch.” Co-written with Darcy Baylis, she described the song as one of her hardest to finish: “It had 100,000 versions, and at one point, I didn’t think it was going to make it onto the album,” she said, expressing gratitude for its eventual success.
A Year of Triumphs
Ninajirachi’s winning streak isn’t just limited to the AIR Awards. Since the release of I Love My Computer, she bagged notable awards including three ARIAs, the Australian Music Prize for Album of the Year, and several others. Notably, she also achieved second place in the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition for “iPod Touch.”
Before this year’s AIR Awards, it is worth noting that she had not previously won in this category. The trajectory of her achievements signifies her rising influence and talent in the independent music scene.
Absence from the Ceremony
Ironically, while Ninajirachi was racking up awards, she was absent from the ceremony due to her ongoing tour in the United States, including a gig at Lollapalooza on the same day as the AIR Awards. In a pre-recorded segment, she humorously stated, “If I could teleport, I would,” reflecting on her desire to be present to celebrate her successes.
Recognition for I Love My Computer
The acclaim for I Love My Computer extended beyond individual awards; it also triumphed in several industry categories at the 20th annual AIR Awards. The album was recognized with honors for Independent Mix, Studio or Mastering Engineer of the Year for Thomas Purcell (Wave Racer), along with recognition for the Independent Publicity Team of the Year and Independent Marketing Team of the Year, attributed to NLV Records and The Orchard.
Celebrating Other Winners
While Ninajirachi’s night was certainly a highlight, it wasn’t without notable achievements by other artists. Folk B*tch Trio had a substantial presence, securing wins for Best Independent Blues and Roots Album or EP, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and Independent Music Video of the Year for their track “Cathode Ray.” Additionally, a wide range of genres was represented in the awards—Wilsn won for Best Independent Soul/RnB Album or EP, while Ruby Gill claimed the award for Best Independent Country Album or EP.
Industry Contributions Honored
The awards also recognized significant contributions in the industry. Sebastian Chase, the founder of MGM Distribution, received the Outstanding Achievement Award, with a heartfelt speech delivered by his son, Michael Chase. AIR Awards: A Tradition of Excellence
The AIR Awards, established in 2006, aim to recognize, promote, and celebrate the successes of Australia’s Independent Music sector. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, AIR held a promise of facilitating state funding for the awards and Indie-Con, ensuring their place in Adelaide until at least 2028.
Amidst performances from local talents like The Tullamarines and Cookin’ on 3 Burners, AIR CEO Maria Amato highlighted the night’s theme: “Tonight we’re celebrating you—the independent artists who do things your way.”
