Electrisize Festival: A Journey Through the Seventeenth Edition
The Electrisize Festival recently wrapped up its seventeenth edition, making an unforgettable mark on the hearts of 55,000 festivalgoers. Celebrated at the picturesque Haus Hohenbusch in Erkelenz, Germany, the event showcased an impressive lineup of more than 150 artists spread across eight vibrant stages. Over three full days of sun-kissed euphoria, attendees experienced a unique blend of top-tier music, high-energy performances, and an almost intimate atmosphere, all packed into one of Europe’s premier electronic music festivals.
The Journey to Electrisize
My journey began in Den Haag, Netherlands, utilizing the ease of public transit. A tram ride and two trains led me seamlessly to Venlo, from where I took a short trip to Mönchengladbach. A kind local then drove us to our hotel, a charming castle-turned-wedding venue just fifteen minutes from the festival grounds. This combination of transportation and accommodation showcased the festival’s dedication to making the experience simple and enjoyable for its attendees. Tools like the Electrisize app—which provided shuttle schedules, travel routes, and a complete timetable—played a critical role in enhancing the overall festival experience.
Accommodation and Camping
During my stay at Hotel Burg Wegberg, the contrast between festival-goers in vibrant attire and elegantly dressed wedding guests in the same corridors sparked humorous moments. The hotel’s breakfast was top-notch, and its old-world charm created an unexpected yet delightful backdrop to a festival of this scale.
While my friends and I opted not to camp—those days behind me, alas—we explored the Electricity Campsite and were thoroughly impressed. With its own stage, grocery store stocked with essentials, and elaborate camping setups resembling luxurious second homes, the campsite radiated a party atmosphere that rivaled the main festival grounds.
A Stage for Every Taste
The festival boasted eight diverse stages, each catering to different musical preferences and contributing to the Electrisize charm. Two noteworthy stages—Hardsize, celebrating ten years of hardstyle, and Tapuya, dedicated to techno for fifteen years—featured special anniversary highlights that brought added excitement.
The Mainstage, awash in whites, purples, and oranges, stood like an urban skyline, captivating many as it exuded a massive presence even during the day. The stage was a visual feast with bursts of fog and pyrotechnics, creating an immersive experience for those thrumming to the beats of top acts.
Tapuya struck a special chord with me—home to emerging artists and an innovative stage design that allowed crowds to get up close to performances without needing VIP access. This was paired with the added surprise of a backstage swimming pool, a festival first for me, which added a sense of whimsy to the hard-hitting techno vibes.
The Hardsize Stage was another highlight, boasting an incredible roster that drove attendees to a frenzy. Well-known names like Brennan Heart, Sickmode, Ran-D, and Coone stirred the crowd to near-chaos over its anniversary weekend, illustrating the undeniable love for hard dance music.
Beyond the Stages: A Holistic Festival Experience
Equipped with comfortable chill zones, hammocks, and pop-up activities like a pull-up challenge from XL Nutrition, the festival design prioritized relaxation and social interaction. Other innovative spaces included the new Valley of Sound Stage, which emulated a cozy mountain atmosphere, adding a refreshing take amid the high-energy vibes of the larger stages.
Unique touches, such as the Thunder Stage, provided an unexpected rock and metal element, diverging from the predominantly electronic lineup. Additionally, cozy havens like Camp Asbach transformed a vintage camper van into a vibrant bar and stage, presenting more laid-back sounds away from the frenetic rhythm of larger areas.
Music to Remember
The diverse lineup catered to eclectic tastes, making every set memorable. Showtek’s performance stood out, seamlessly blending classic hits and newer tracks that sent the audience into a euphoric frenzy. Brennan Heart transported me through nostalgia with poignant tracks that had emotional resonances, enhancing engagement with the crowd’s vocal enthusiasm during moments like “Time to Say Goodbye.”
The festival didn’t just revolve around established artists; discovering new talent was a core component. Performers like Ben Techy and Kotorri captured my interest, enthralling me with their dynamic sounds and adding fresh energy to the festival’s atmosphere.
Culinary Offerings
Beyond music, the festival experience extended to its wide variety of food options, running on a token system for convenience. From classic Fries with Mayonnaise to Pulled Chicken Sandwiches and Korean Chicken Tenders, the culinary scene emphasized both variety and quality. I particularly enjoyed the 24ice strawberry daiquiri slushie—the perfect festival refreshment.
A Family Vibe
A defining feature of Electrisize is its sense of community. The festival’s founders, Michael Frentzen and Raphael Meyersieck, shared anecdotes about the festival’s growth from a humble gathering to an expansive event catering to 55,000 people. Despite this growth, the core ethos remains rooted in familiarity and camaraderie, ensuring that each attendee feels a part of a larger family.
Frentzen’s commitment to the team was particularly evident during the fireworks ceremony decision-making, where he prioritized crew enjoyment over technical logistics, showcasing the genuine familial bonds fostered within the festival.
Spectacular Fireworks Displays
Every festival night culminated in breathtaking fireworks displays, synchronized meticulously with music to create an unforgettable spectacle. The opening show, featuring an explosive array of lasers and pyrotechnics to the sound of Swedish House Mafia, was a gut-wrenching moment of euphoric unity, reminding everyone why they had come together to celebrate.
A Legacy of Experience
The Electrisize Festival stands as a testament to how a festival can expand without sacrificing its intimate feel. With carefully curated stages, a vast array of culinary offerings, and an enriching atmosphere that fosters connections and new experiences, attendees can expect something unique each year. As plans unfold for the eighteenth edition, already set for August 6-8, 2027, one thing is certain: Electrisize will continue to be a beloved destination for electronic music lovers and festival enthusiasts alike.
