Still have eyes for the first two Baldur’s Gate games? You’re in luck. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition continue to get, well, enhanced today thanks to the beta branch of their supporting Infinity Engine 2.7. And if you’re still waiting on a full translation effort into a currently unsupported language, the team in charge of keeping these classics playable is happy to give a platform to any community translators willing to do it themselves, which is certainly better than nothing.
Announced on Twitter/X just yesterday, Beamdog, the team behind 2023’s Saturday morning cartoon-style action RPG MythForce, opened the gates for eager Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition testers and tinkerers to try out Infinity Engine 2.7 on its compatible games, which also includes Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. All that eligible players need to do is fiddle around in the Steam settings of each game and opt into the latest beta branch.
Worried about your modded playthroughs getting borked by the jump from 2.6 to 2.7? Beamdog suggests you “just copy/paste the whole of the game folder in the meantime” to ensure you can still fire up the older 2.6 version once the game updates. This precaution allows players to enjoy the benefits of the beta while retaining access to their previously modded experiences.
As for what’s new, the update focuses on long‑term stability, modern platform support, and a few quality-of‑life improvements. Notably, community-backed translations for Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian have now been added to Baldur’s Gate 2. Icewind Dale is also getting enhanced with new Hungarian and Japanese localization efforts. The introduction of dynamic language support signifies a move towards a more inclusive gaming experience, making it easier to add additional language packs in the future. Beamdog is also committed to rolling out a requested Spanish translation for the original Baldur’s Gate, but only if community translators step up to create it. It’s a commendable gesture that showcases the team’s willingness to collaborate with passionate fans.
For those playing the GOG versions, there’s no need to worry about being left out. Beamdog has confirmed that “the patch will come to GOG,” although the current testing is mainly focused on the Steam platform due to its technical convenience. This inclusive approach ensures that players across both platforms will ultimately benefit from the updates and improvements in Infinity Engine 2.7.
The 2.7 update also brings a significant feature: proper cloud saving. This means that players can control their cloud saves via Steam instead of managing them through the Gameplay Options screen in each game. Coupled with new native support for Macs running on Apple Silicon, these changes bring a new level of accessibility, allowing players to seamlessly switch between PC and Mac systems without worrying about save file compatibility.
Curious about what the team expects from early testers? They have provided a detailed list of desired feedback on the Beamdog forums. Players are encouraged to share their experiences and report any bugs or issues they encounter. While you’re there, if you have ideas for potential features in a future 2.8 release, they’re eager to hear suggestions too. However, be aware that the road to new additions could take some time—just as fans have experienced in the past.
