Born from Chicago’s underground in 1985, Trax Records has shaped dance music culture for four decades – and now, it looks ahead. To mark its 40th anniversary, the label unveiled Trax Records: The 40th Anniversary Collection, a multi-format release celebrating house music’s legacy and its ever-evolving future.
Founded by Larry Sherman and now led by Screamin’ Rachael, Trax helped define a genre that once had no name. Rachael, an early house trailblazer, brought punk energy into the studio and carved her path near Frankie Knuckles’ legendary Warehouse. Through bold collaborations – from Afrika Bambaataa to Larry Levan—she played a central role in taking the Chicago sound to New York and beyond.

Now, the anniversary release pairs genre architects like Marshall Jefferson, Phuture, and Paul Johnson with boundary-pushers such as Hiroko Yamamura and Analog 87. The collection launches June 20, with exclusive vinyl drops and bespoke artwork curated by Jorge. On the same day, Trax will host a live event at Reckless Records, featuring performances from veterans like Joe Smooth and rising names like LaZara.
Meanwhile, the label’s limited Rising Again release explores tech-meets-art collaborations, including brainwave – generated soundscapes, and donates proceeds to Chance the Rapper’s nonprofit. Alongside this, Trax is launching its first clothing line with designer Mario Maldonado, extending its legacy into streetwear.
Four decades later, Trax remains fiercely independent – committed to creativity, community, and the pulse of house music’s true origins.
