Mau P: The Rising Star of Dance Music
Setting the Stage
It’s not unusual for DJs to share their glamorous lifestyles on social media, but when Dutch dance producer Mau P posted a recent carousel on Instagram, it contained more than just selfies. Between snapshots of him flashing a confident smile and strutting on stage with a party cup in hand, he made a bold proclamation: “In 2026, I will give the world an album, a label, a clothing line.” This announcement sent ripples through the dance music community, with no one on his team aware of his plans prior to the reveal.
An Artist on a Mission
Sitting across from him over sushi in a dimly lit Downtown Los Angeles restaurant, Mau explains his motivations: “I just wanted to put it online so people would hold me accountable for it. Now, I have to do it.” His relaxed approach to monumental announcements may seem casual in an industry that often treats publicity with military precision, yet it’s precisely this authenticity that has propelled him to the forefront of the global dance scene.
Despite being only 29, Mau P has become a ubiquitous figure since his viral hit “Drugs From Amsterdam” took the internet by storm in 2022. With hundreds of millions of streams, he thanks a tight-knit group of friends for the meteoric rise rather than a vast team or grand marketing strategies. “It’s just friends and people I work really well with, and we’re all just figuring it out,” he notes.
2025: A Year of Opportunities
In 2025, Mau embraced every opportunity that came his way, playing key dance festivals like EDC and Ultra, as well as mainstream venues like Coachella. His exhilarating performances transformed the Sahara tent into a raving party, captivating approximately 50,000 festival-goers during his Saturday-night slot. Reflecting on the production, he humbly attributes it to “me and my friends,” emphasizing the grassroots nature of his work.
From August to October, he held a residency at the iconic Pacha Ibiza, gaining experience that he believes is invaluable. By the end of the season, he felt like he had truly learned how to command a crowd. The residency, alongside packed headlining shows in Los Angeles that grossed over $3 million, heralded busy yet fruitful times that left little room for the planning of his ambitious projects for 2026.
The Vision for 2026
Mau’s trifecta of upcoming projects—the album, the clothing line, and the label—remain in various stages of development. “These are all things I’ve been thinking about for at least two or three years,” he admits, with aspirations being high but the execution still in flux.
Born to a musical family in Amsterdam, Mau’s roots run deep in the artistic world. His mother is a singer, and his father was a conductor who left an indelible mark on him. Upon the recent passing of his father, Mau pays tribute by working at the studio where Gerbrand Westveen used to create music, surrounded by the atmosphere of creativity.
The Evolution from Maurice West to Mau P
Before his meteoric rise as Mau P, he was known as Maurice West, launching his dance music career in 2014. After years of remixes and collaborations, his transition marked a significant shift from big room EDM to a more contemporary, tech house sound. The release of “Drugs From Amsterdam” proved to be his breakthrough moment, garnering nearly 300 million streams and effectively changing the trajectory of his career.
His collaborative approach with longtime friend Robert Pronk, who doesn’t come from a dance music background, embodies the essence of Mau’s philosophy: “We’re always both looking for the ‘f–k you’ in a song,” he says, referencing how they aim to weave humor and cheekiness into their work.
The Path Forward
With a staggering 683.6 million official global on-demand streams, Mau’s output is already impressive, especially considering the relatively small number of tracks in his catalog. “I put a lot of pressure on myself,” he states. “I want to have big moments—not for fame, but for something very valuable.” With plans for an album that’s meant to be thorough and timeless, he’s deliberate in his creative process, envisioning each song as a cohesive part of an overall narrative.
The formation of his new label, Baddest Behaviour Records, aims to create a platform for upcoming artists, an extension of Mau’s desire to give back to the community that raised him. His clothing line seeks to connect personally with audiences through styles he would wear, keeping authenticity at the forefront.
Relationships Matter
Mau’s charismatic personality extends beyond the stage; his networking ability plays a significant role in his industry success. Co-manager Halil Çakar highlights how Mau’s genuine love for his peers fosters respect and relationships that are vital, especially in Europe. As Çakar puts it, “He’s created those relationships himself,” noting Mau’s knack for being a good hang while establishing strong ties with influential figures in the industry.
Overall, Mau embodies a blend of ambition, authenticity, and community, making him a standout figure in today’s dance music landscape. His forthcoming projects are not just a personal aspiration; they aim to encapsulate the lively culture he thrives in, providing something meaningful for his fans and contemporaries alike.
