This trend was a central theme discussed during a health seminar organized by Praja Arogya Vedika in Vijayawada on February 22, 2026.

The Changing Face of Heart Health

Cardiologist A. Purnanand, a key speaker at the seminar, highlighted this worrying trend, noting that more young individuals are being diagnosed with heart ailments. Factors such as lifestyle changes, unhealthy dietary habits, increased mental stress, and addictions—including alcohol and tobacco—contribute to this alarming shift. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has further amplified these issues, with a significant uptick in cardiac cases observed.

Lifestyle Choices: The Heart’s Best Friends and Foes

Dr. Purnanand emphasized that nearly 80% of heart diseases are preventable through proactive lifestyle choices. Simple yet effective measures can significantly reduce the risk of developing heart conditions. He advised individuals to prioritize:

  • Balanced Diet: Incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into daily meals can promote cardiovascular health and help regulate body weight.

  • Regular Exercise: Engaging in at least one hour of physical activity each day is crucial. Whether through walking, jogging, or structured workouts, staying active can help maintain heart health.

  • Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for recovery and overall well-being. Establishing a regular sleep schedule can positively impact mental health and reduce heart disease risk.

  • Healthy Relationships: Fostering strong family and social connections is vital for emotional well-being, which in turn influences physical health.

Dr. Purnanand also underscored the importance of mental health, urging individuals to find ways to relax and de-stress. Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and mindfulness can play a crucial role in maintaining heart health.

Warning Signs and the Importance of Check-ups

Recognizing warning signs early can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Individuals were encouraged to pay attention to symptoms like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Dr. Purnanand reinforced the necessity for regular cardiac check-ups, especially for those managing high blood pressure or diabetes. These preventative measures can lead to early detection and intervention, potentially saving lives.

Community Initiatives for Heart Health Awareness

During the seminar, Dr. Purnanand unveiled his recently authored book on heart health, designed to educate readers on maintaining a healthy heart. The event also featured Chadalavada Bhanu Prasad, founder of the Save Young Heart Foundation and Kiran Teja Charitable Trust. Mr. Bhanu Prasad discussed ongoing efforts to raise awareness and facilitate early detection of heart issues among individuals aged 30 to 45 through free heart screening camps. Such initiatives are vital, as they provide essential services to a demographic often overlooked in health screenings.

The collaboration between Praja Arogya Vedika and the foundation highlights the community’s commitment to combating rising heart ailments. M. V. Ramanayya, the state president of Praja Arogya Vedika, and G. Vijay Prakash, the district president, were also present, emphasizing the collective goal of public health promotion.

An Engaged Community

Approximately 500 individuals attended the seminar, reflecting a growing awareness of heart health issues within the community. Engaging events like these serve not only as a source of information but also as a call to action for better health practices. Community forums encourage open discussions about health, allowing individuals to express concerns and seek guidance, thus fostering a culture of health-consciousness.

This evolving narrative surrounding heart health among the youth serves as both a wake-up call and an opportunity for transformation. By acknowledging the factors that contribute to heart disease and committing to healthy lifestyles, individuals can work toward a more heart-healthy future.
