The Significance of Gifts: Advancing the Future of Technology Education

From Aspiring Engineer to Graphic Communicator: The Journey of Elijah Kennedy

When Elijah Kennedy embarked on his academic journey at North Carolina State University (NC State), his aspirations revolved around the mechanical engineering field. Influenced by his high school experience at Davie County High School, where he engaged in drafting and collaborated on projects like building a solar-powered go-kart, engineering seemed a natural path. However, it was only upon integrating into his coursework that he realized his true passion lay elsewhere.

Discovering a New Passion

Settling into the vibrant atmosphere of the College of Education, Kennedy discovered the graphic communications concentration—a program that captured his imagination. “It’s the perfect middle ground between design and engineering,” he reflects. The blend of artistry and technical skills appealed to him, providing a unique opportunity to express creativity while applying engineering principles.

As he transitions into his senior year, Kennedy recognizes how this shift not only aligns with his goals but has also invigorated his academic life. His courses have challenged him to confront real-world design problems, emphasizing human-centered design, and encouraging him to consider how his work influences people’s lives.

“I changed from ‘I have to go to this class’ into ‘I get to go to this class,’” he shares, illustrating the profound impact that his new focus has had on his educational experience.

The Crow/Jenkins Scholarship: Supporting Future Innovators

Kennedy’s journey has been further enriched by the financial support he received from the John L. Crow and John R. Jenkins Scholarship for the 2025–2026 academic year. Established in 2014, this scholarship has become a beacon of hope for students in the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education. This commitment to developing the next generation of educators in technology and design creates an environment where students can thrive.

“The endowment honors a legacy of excellence in Technology, Engineering, and Design Education by investing in educators who will teach and lead in an increasingly technological world,” asserts Aaron Clark, a professor and co-director for engineering education at NC State.

Historic Support for Technology Education

The significance of this scholarship has been magnified by a recent transformative $1 million gift to the endowment. Starting in the 2026–2027 academic year, the scholarship will expand its reach to support nine students annually—six undergraduates and three graduates. This generous donation is poised to bolster NC State’s commitment to cultivating future educators, ensuring that they equip students with vital skills in technology and engineering fields.

William Sandoval, head of the Department of STEM Education, emphasizes the importance of this investment, stating, “We are deeply grateful to be able to support future educators who will expand access to technology careers across the state and beyond.”

Honoring a Legacy

The scholarship pays homage to the enduring legacy of Johnny Crow, a dedicated educator whose influence spanned over five decades at NC State. Crow’s history of teaching courses in visual thinking and descriptive geometry has significantly shaped the graphic communications concentration. He believes in the necessity of creativity within engineering, stating, “I knew engineers needed the creative aspect of [engineering].”

The establishment of the Crow/Jenkins Scholarship, initiated by John Jenkins in recognition of his long friendship with Crow, has made a lasting impact on countless students. With its new funding, it stands as the largest student scholarship endowment in the College of Education.

Embracing Technical and Creative Challenges

For Kennedy, the synthesis of his design coursework and real-world applications has prepared him for a professional future rich in possibilities. His recent internship in structural design at an engineering firm in Morrisville provided him with hands-on experiences—crafting building drawings and developing documentation—further solidifying his skill set.

“The ability to communicate ideas visually is essential,” Kennedy states. He emphasizes how essential it is for engineers and designers to articulate their concepts effectively, ensuring that innovation translates into tangible impacts.

A Focused Path Forward

The support he has received through the Crow/Jenkins Scholarship has been transformative in Kennedy’s educational pursuits. By alleviating financial burdens, it has provided him with the space necessary to concentrate on his studies, form connections within the academic community, and pursue his ultimate goal of earning a degree.

“Having one less thing to worry about helps me focus on why I’m actually here,” he reflects. This clarity has propelled him forward as he stands on the cusp of a promising career in a field where technology, design, and education intersect in dynamic and meaningful ways.
