A Career Unlike Any Other: The Journey of Glenn Morrison

Glenn Morrison’s career is a remarkable tapestry woven from different threads—each representing a phase, an influence, or an emotional connection to sound. His path in music resists easy categorization; it doesn’t hinge upon a singular breakthrough or a neatly defined era. Instead, Morrison’s journey unfolds as a continuum, crafted through early musical discipline, subconscious influences, and a relentless drive to translate feelings into sound across ever-shifting contexts.

Long before he stepped into the spotlight of dance music culture, Morrison’s relationship with electronic music commenced in a space he would only later come to recognize. He admits, “I used to answer it with the typical ‘was a teenager, saved up for a while, bought my turntables and mixer, and the rest is history’ type answer. But lately I have thought that indeed it was far before.” This origin story, he posits, can be traced back to his childhood experiences, absorbing the electronic textures of video game soundtracks. “Playing video games like ‘Donkey Kong Country’… this kind of child imprinting, unconsciously listening whilst playing games, there is something to that which predates me even listening to electronic music as I did in my teens.”

Parallel to this foundational experience was a formal grounding in classical piano. From an early age, performance and competition were central to his development. “As a pre-teen kid, I was playing classical piano and competing & performing with judges and festivals,” Morrison recalls. This solid classical foundation made the transition into electronic music feel not like a drastic shift, but rather a natural extension. “Making and performing electronic music came as a natural extension for me as I rode that late 90s electronic wave.”

As he started delving into dance music culture, Morrison’s influences began to spread out. He absorbed the sounds and styles of artists like Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong with his legendary ‘Essential Mixes’, Global Underground compilations, and the expansive narratives of Sasha and John Digweed. For him, these artists weren’t merely inspirations; they provided frameworks for understanding pacing, atmosphere, and emotional narrative in music.

The evolution of his career wasn’t a simple upward trajectory; rather, it consisted of numerous distinct phases, each marked by a special achievement. “There are many moments in my music career since I was a child where I can say ‘oh, that was a special period or accomplishment,’” he reflects. His list of achievements is extensive—classical accolades, millions of streams, Billboard-charting pop records with Sony, and an extensive run of underground club tracks like ‘Contact’ and ‘Into The Deep’ that solidified his identity on dancefloors. Coupled with performances alongside heavyweights such as Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, David Guetta, and Avicii, Morrison’s portfolio showcases his versatility rather than confining him to a single lane.

However, Morrison is equally candid about the less visible side of his journey. “Sometimes I feel like a polar bear on an iceberg, floating around at sea on my own, trying to find land,” he describes, a vivid metaphor that captures the isolation that often comes with a long-standing career in the music industry. “That is a sad but accurate example of how I feel sometimes, navigating this music industry to the very best of my abilities.” This admission adds depth to his narrative, highlighting the emotional weight behind a career often seen solely through a lens of success.

Musically, Morrison’s output is anchored by a simple, yet compelling intent: to communicate feelings with clarity and depth. He mentions key tracks like ‘Contact’, ‘No Sudden Moves’, ‘Circles’, ‘Blue Skies With Linda’, and ‘Cosmic Flight’, noting, “these tracks really formed that early seminal ‘Glenny sound’ which has made an emotional impact with people over the years.” His collaborative nature with artists like Deadmau5, Charlie May, and Armin van Buuren was instrumental in honing his technical proficiencies and compositional abilities. “All were instrumental in teaching me how to produce electronic music and compose during my early years,” he shares.

At the core of Morrison’s work lies a direct and personal motivation: simply conveying his musical feelings with authenticity. “I am just trying to communicate my musical feelings in the best way possible, using the tools and synths and gear that I have, to share that with others,” he explains, emphasizing a desire for his creations to resonate within the global electronic music community.

This ethos also extends into the label he founded in 2016, Fall From Grace Records. Intended as a platform for “thoughtful and forward-thinking electronic music,” the label has burgeoned into a substantial entity. “Today we have almost 200 releases, spanning around 100+ artists, with a catalogue of over 1500 songs,” he notes. Despite the growth, Morrison emphasizes the importance of measured expansion: “I have been working hard to expand the label group as best I can navigate… in a controlled effort to build catalogue and artist repertoire.”

As a DJ, Morrison adheres to a philosophy rooted in restraint and structure. “I believe a journey aspect, coupled with seamless mixing and transitions, is my perfect style of set,” he says, prioritizing cohesion over spectacle. “I don’t need microphone talking or big hype ups, just great music thoughtfully orchestrated and put together is enough for me.” His approach is further shaped by his experiences at iconic venues such as Amnesia Ibiza, Pacha Buenos Aires, and Space Miami, where narrative progression holds more weight than flashy performance theatrics.

Looking toward the future, Morrison plans to focus on continuity rather than radical reinvention. “I am working hard this year on lots of new music, as well as my Rave Cave ‘Vinyl Only’ YouTube series,” he shares, alongside plans for touring, live-streamed ambient performances, and ongoing label activity. His emphasis is on presence and consistency: “I am trying hard to have people hear what I do on a daily basis, even if I am not touring as heavily as I used to when I was younger.”

A defining thread in Glenn Morrison’s career lies in his persistence—a willingness to keep moving, creating, and refining his craft in the face of both triumph and challenges. “I am very grateful for what I have accomplished in my life,” he reflects, adding with a hint of weariness, “though it can be challenging at times to deal with different types of personalities in the business.”

This duality—scale and solitude, momentum and reflection—gives Morrison’s work its unique weight. Rather than a fixed identity, he embodies an ongoing process, continually exploring and evolving within the expansive landscape of electronic music.
