Last month, Latin EDM powerhouse Deorro unveiled his highly anticipated third studio album, BOTAS & RAVE. This project represents a fusion of vibrant rhythms from cumbia, banda, quebradita, and tribal music, all infused with high-octane EDM. The album features eleven tracks, propelled at energetic tempos of 160 BPM, making it a thrilling auditory experience filled with heavy drops and a bold new direction in Deorro’s musical journey. Collaborating with iconic Mexican artists such as 3BallMTY, Voces Del Rancho, and Montez De Durango, BOTAS & RAVE encapsulates the essence of genre blending that Deorro has championed, merging the heart of Mexican music with the unrestrained energy of modern electronic soundscapes.
In this exclusive interview, we delve into the creative vision behind the album and explore Deorro’s journey as a cross-cultural artist navigating the dynamic world of music.
“BOTAS & RAVE” pulls inspiration from distinct styles like banda, cumbia, and quebradita. How do you strike a balance between honoring the traditional elements of these genres while ensuring they resonate with a global EDM audience?
“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to everyone for their incredible feedback and, of course, a huge thank you to my team that made this project possible. It truly takes a village, and I’m forever grateful.” Deorro then elaborates on his album’s premise. “BOTAS & RAVE is a mosaic of different worlds within the Mexican musical landscape—each genre, like banda and cumbia, has such richness that contributes to what we define as la cultura Mexicana.” He recalls how, as a child, family gatherings fueled his passion for music, instilling a desire to understand the songs that made people dance and enjoy life.
“The project allowed me to immerse myself in sounds I grew up with. I meticulously explored traditional elements and found joy in crafting a sound that represents our culture’s vibrancy.” Deorro’s connection to the music was so profound that the creative process felt instinctive, transforming into a heartfelt tribute to his roots.
What would you like audiences to take away from this album regarding the future of Mexican EDM and its global recognition?
“To be honest, my ultimate dream is for listeners from both worlds to discover and appreciate the other side after experiencing ‘BOTAS & RAVE.’ I hope people who are accustomed to electronic music will feel curious about the essence of banda and cumbia, and vice versa. If listeners find even the slightest spark of interest in another genre, that’s a win for me. This album represents my commitment to music and my gratitude toward my fans. It’s everything I aim to give back to the art that has nurtured me over the years.”
As a trailblazer in the Mexican EDM scene, in what ways has your approach to “bridging genres” evolved from early hits like ‘Bailar’ to the new tracks on this project?
“In truth, my foundational approach remains unchanged. I’ve always held deep respect for the music I create, and that gratitude fuels my creativity. When I produced ‘Bailar’ with Elvis Crespo, it was one of those serendipitous moments that felt instinctual. I didn’t just want to create a remix; I aimed to honor the merengue genre while bringing it into the electronic space.”
Deorro discusses his rigorous process of unearthing the intricacies of various genres. “For ‘Bailar,’ I invested almost two years fully immersed in understanding merengue—its rhythms and traditions—before I felt confident to create my own rendition, ultimately solidifying my commitment to blending cultural sounds.” He emphasizes that every genre he approaches is a new journey that warrants respect and understanding.
This album features a variety of collaborators like 3BallMTY, Voces Del Rancho, and Montez De Durango. What was the selection process for these collaborations?
“Working with legends like 3BallMTY and Montez De Durango is genuinely a full-circle experience for me. I grew up listening to their music, which embodies the soul of our culture. Collaborating with these artists allowed me to creatively shape the sound while respecting their artistic authenticity. They trusted me to co-write and compose melodies, giving life to the tracks that resonate deeply with what I hold dear.”
He adds that this authenticity was paramount throughout the album-making process, as he aimed to connect with artists who genuinely reflect the sounds and stories of their cultural roots.
You mentioned that this project allowed you to “relive your youth.” Did any specific song or rhythm transport you back to a childhood memory during production?
“Absolutely! Working on zapateado was a thrill. I have vivid memories of my uncles dancing, stomping their boots, and celebrating family occasions. The track ‘Zapateado Encabronado’ was the anthem of those gatherings. Diving into the rhythms and instruments associated with that genre really felt like a nostalgic journey, rekindling the cultural connections that have shaped my life and artistry.”
As a part of Peso Pluma’s Double P Records, how has being in this creative ecosystem influenced the direction of your album?
“Being part of Double P has been a blessing. The support and encouragement from my team have been instrumental in my growth as an artist. I feel welcomed and valued, and that positivity fuels my creativity immensely. I owe so much to them, and they inspire me to bring my best work consistently.”
How will your upcoming “BOTAS Y RAVE” shows differ from typical club performances?
“I envision ‘BOTAS & RAVE’ as a communal celebration of culture. We’re planning to integrate live performances of the album into my shows, potentially featuring a special segment with the band to create a unique, immersive experience for fans. The goal is to connect profoundly through both sound and live energy—we’re just getting started!”
As a noted taco enthusiast, if it’s 1 a.m., and you’ve just finished a set, what’s your go-to taco order?
“Oh, if I’m being honest, I go through taco phases! I love it all—carne asada, al pastor, shrimp, quesatacos, you name it. I can’t resist piling on all the different salsas to make each bite perfect!”
Is there anything else you want to share with your fans regarding the album or upcoming plans?
“I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming support of ‘BOTAS & RAVE.’ This album is a celebration of our culture, and I genuinely hope to celebrate together with all of you soon. Remember, this party is inclusive—everyone from all backgrounds is invited!”
