Festival Rankings and Achievements
In the latest rankings, Neon Countdown has claimed the 53rd position, while its sibling brand, Sunset By Neon, is celebrated at 85th. According to NEON Projects’ CEO, Yogeshwara Rao, simply earning a spot on DJ Mag’s list is a significant triumph. “For Malaysia, of course, we feel very proud to deliver a show that people recognize and vote for,” he asserts. The inclusion of a relatively new brand like Sunset By Neon, which caters to diverse musical tastes, within its debut year signifies a commitment to quality and innovation in the EDM landscape.
Origins and Growth of NEON Projects
NEON Projects launched its inaugural Neon Countdown in Malaysia back in 2015. However, after a successful edition in Thailand, the team recognized the vast potential for catering to international audiences through electronic dance music (EDM). This pivotal experience prompted a strategic decision to halt Malaysian events for about five years, focusing instead on expanding the brand internationally. NEON Projects made its mark in formidable markets like China, Japan, and Qatar, establishing a robust presence in the global festival scene.
Homecoming and Major Acts
Having built a solid international foundation, the moment came to return to Malaysian roots. This resurgence saw the transformation of Sunset By Neon from an intimate gathering to a large-scale, multi-day electronic music festival hosted in the iconic Genting Highlands. Since returning, NEON Projects has attracted global icons such as Hardwell, Boris Brejcha, and R3HAB to perform at its festivals. The lineup for the upcoming 2025 Neon Countdown promises to be equally exciting, featuring renowned artists like W&W, Timmy Trumpet, and Nicky Romero.
Challenges in the Festival Landscape
Despite these achievements, securing top-tier international DJs has presented challenges, primarily due to strict regional exclusivity clauses from major global festivals. These clauses often limit DJs from performing at competing events within certain territories, creating hurdles for smaller companies like NEON Projects to compete with festival giants. “It’s a battle of dollars and cents, and we have to fight for our piece of the market,” Yogeshwara explains candidly.
The Easier Malaysian Experience
Interestingly, Yogeshwara notes that organizing events in Malaysia is less complicated compared to Thailand. He highlights the meticulous regulatory framework in Thailand, which complicates the process of obtaining permits and serving alcohol at events. “Malaysia is an easier place to work with — it’s just about how we do it. We ensure water stations and an alcohol zone to take care of festival-goers,” he elaborates. The collaborative relationship with local officials also streamlines event execution.
Introducing Upperground to Asia
In another exciting development, NEON Projects partnered with Ukrainian DJ duo Artbat to bring their innovative festival brand, Upperground, to Asia for the first time. Initially a breakout track, Upperground evolved into a full-fledged international festival. In a collaborative format, Sunset By Neon supported the event while Artbat maintained creative control, ensuring a unique audiovisual experience for attendees.
A Memorable Debut
The debut of Upperground in Genting Highlands on June 20 attracted thousands, who enjoyed a mesmerizing blend of melodic techno accompanied by stunning fireworks and cinematic visuals. The collaboration with Artbat aimed to foster communal experiences among fans, emphasizing a shared emotional journey during the performances. “The main thing is to be like one organism with the crowd, to bring our energy, our music, and our mood,” the duo affirm.
Celebrating Culture and Continuity
R3HAB, another prominent DJ, expressed his elation at performing in Malaysia, particularly for a festival where he had not previously appeared. He appreciates the rich cultural tapestry of Malaysia and highlights the warm reception he receives from the audience. Alongside Artbat, R3HAB delivered compelling performances of popular tracks, keeping festival-goers engaged and entertained throughout the night.
Looking Ahead
As excitement builds for the return of Sunset By Neon in Genting Highlands on September 26 and 27, fans eagerly await the announcement of the Chapter 2 lineup. NEON Projects continues to redefine Malaysia’s position in the global EDM scene, proving that with passion and strategic foresight, the potential for success knows no boundaries.
