Launched in Texas in 2014, Alpha School takes a radical approach to education by replacing conventional classroom instruction with human “guides” and specialized AI tutors.
Mackenzie Price, co-founder of Alpha School, states, “Our AI tutor is able to very precisely pinpoint where a student is academically and then help put them into the lessons that are at their pace and their level and coach them.” This system is not reliant on chatbots, which Price disparagingly labels as “cheat-bots.” Instead, the school’s model emphasizes a blend of AI-driven learning with life skills education, leadership workshops, and opportunities for physical activity.
The Cost of Innovation
While the concept of leveraging AI in education is innovative, it comes with a hefty price tag. Tuition for Alpha School will be $55,000 per year when it opens this fall, with room for about 100 students. This exclusivity raises questions about equity and access in education: will such advanced AI tools be available for all, or will they cater to a privileged few?
Expert Opinions on AI in Education
As schools pivot towards AI-enhanced instruction, education experts urge caution. An Chih Cheng, an associate professor at DePaul University, stresses the limitations of AI in educational settings. “The computer does not think. We thought AI is thinking. No, it’s not. It’s an algorithm,” he explains. Cheng highlights that although some AI systems may provide instant feedback, they are not foolproof. They can propagate errors or misunderstandings, leading to misinformation.
Cheng also raises concerns that educational AI tools could create further disparities in public education. He envisions a future where, in a cost-cutting move, AI could even replace traditional teachers, potentially compromising the quality of education for less affluent districts.
Public School Initiatives
In response to the growing role of AI in education, some public school districts, including Chicago Public Schools (CPS), have already begun integrating AI tools within their curriculum. CPS has published a guidebook on best practices for educators, emphasizing the importance of using vetted and approved generative AI tools. The district aims to foster innovation while upholding essential educational principles, ensuring that students build foundational skills and critical thinking abilities.
A CPS spokesperson elucidates, “The District continually works to adapt policies as technology changes and recently updated acceptable use policies and information security policies to include AI.” These efforts reflect a broader commitment to balancing innovation with educational integrity.
