Enhancing Veteran Care Through Interactive Technology at Dole VA

Enhancing Veteran Care: The Interactive Gaming System at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center

The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center has recently made headlines for its commitment to enhancing the lives of older Veterans through innovative technology. Thanks to the generous contribution from the American Legion Auxiliary of Kansas, the facility has acquired a state-of-the-art interactive gaming system designed to keep older Veterans mentally and socially engaged.

A New Address for Cognitive Engagement

This groundbreaking equipment serves as a vital tool for addressing cognitive decline among older adults, particularly Veterans. The system creates what is often referred to as a “Magic Table,” encompassing a wide array of over 150 interactive games. These games span multiple categories, including memory challenges, educational content, and even entertainment suited for all ages.

The versatility of this interactive platform is noteworthy; it can project games onto various surfaces—be it floors, walls, or tables—ensuring inclusivity for all users. By tracking body movements and gestures, the system transports users into an immersive virtual world, providing not just visual stimulation but also an auditory experience that enhances interaction through projections and sound.

Building Community Through Technology

Sara Monckton, the Community Living Center (CLC) Nurse Manager, expressed genuine excitement at the arrival of the new technology. She emphasized its multifaceted benefits: “We believe it’s going to benefit all our Veterans, both those with cognitive decline and those without,” she said. Monckton highlighted how this system can help to reignite a spirit of camaraderie among the Veterans, something that has been notably absent since the COVID pandemic. By encouraging games that require teamwork and social interaction, Veterans can gather, share laughter, and engage in activities that help foster new friendships.

The interactive projector’s adaptability is particularly significant. Monckton pointed out that it is designed for both group and individual settings, which means that tailored experiences can be created based on the unique needs of each Veteran. This flexibility offers a valuable opportunity for personalized engagement.

The Motivation Behind the Donation

The projector was presented by Tracy Kinnick, the Past Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the State of Kansas. Kinnick’s motivation for securing this technology stemmed from her firsthand experience at a national convention. “I saw these systems showcased and knew I wanted to provide one for our Veterans,” she shared. Kinnick’s enthusiasm for the project reflects the broader goals of the Auxiliary: to create tools that facilitate interaction and friendship among Veterans. She highlighted the system’s adaptability, noting that it can even project games onto a bed sheet, making it accessible for those who may prefer to stay in their rooms.

Her mission aligns with the ultimate aim of the initiative: to bring smiles to Veterans, combat feelings of loneliness, and build a sense of community in a time when social isolation was heightened due to the pandemic.

A Broader Vision for the Future

Pam Ray, National President of the American Legion Auxiliary, also weighed in on the potential impact of this donation. Ray expressed her belief that the new system could serve as a model for other states and VA facilities, emphasizing its far-reaching benefits. “I see this benefiting Veterans tremendously, even those who may not have full physical capabilities,” she said. The mental and physical stimulation this technology provides is described as invaluable, reinforcing the movement toward innovative approaches in Veteran care.

The Technological Details

The new equipment is comprehensive, comprising everything necessary for a seamless interactive experience. It includes a preloaded PC, a projector, an IR tracking camera, an amplifier, and speakers. This wide range of components allows staff to switch between projecting games on various surfaces, paving the way for a dynamic engagement strategy.

The Voice of Medical Expertise

Dr. Christine Schrag, the Medical Director for the Geriatrics and Extended Care service at the Dole VA Medical Center, expressed gratitude for this significant donation. “This interactive technology will be a wonderful addition to our CLC, where we serve many Veterans with cognitive impairment,” she stated. Dr. Schrag noted that virtual environments have shown effectiveness in keeping Veterans mentally, physically, and socially active. The introduction of this innovative technology in their facility is expected to create a more vibrant and engaging atmosphere for the Veterans they serve.

The addition of the interactive gaming system has brought with it an exciting new chapter in the care provided at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. It not only promotes the mental, physical, and social well-being of Veterans but also exemplifies how embracing technology can transform traditional care methods. Through such innovative solutions, the facility continues to honor the sacrifices made by our Veterans, ensuring they receive the quality of life they deserve.
