Early Influences: The Sound of the ’80s
Raised during the golden age of synth-pop, Sandberg’s earliest musical experiences were shaped by artists who blurred the boundaries between technology and emotion. “I was brought up during the ’80s synth-pop era, so my early heroes were The Human League, Heaven 17, and Tangerine Dream,” he recalls. His fascination with sound was nurtured when his mother, a pianist for the BBC, brought home a Roland Juno synthesizer. He spent countless hours exploring its sonic possibilities, not realizing he was laying the groundwork for a lifelong relationship with electronic music.
The cultural landscape of the ’80s was transformative; hip-hop, breakdancing, acid house, Chicago house, and Detroit techno were all erupting simultaneously. “Being a teenager in the ’80s was something magical,” he reflects. Yet among all those influences, Detroit techno arrived in 1987 and fundamentally changed his musical trajectory.
The Defining Moment in Glasgow
One pivotal moment crystallized Sandberg’s journey: standing in Glasgow’s Fury Murry’s club, he heard DJ Robin Burrowes play Rhythim Is Rhythim’s seminal “Nude Photo.” For Sandberg, that experience was almost spiritual. “It was that defining moment where I had to follow that sound coming out of the speakers,” he says. This instinctive calling toward a new musical language led him to be fascinated by the DJ booth. “It was like being on the deck of a spaceship for me,” he adds.
Early opportunities from figures like Keith Robinson of Desert Storm and Colin Barr at The Choice allowed him to step behind the decks during Scotland’s formative club scene years. Looking back, he recalls a cultural landscape still finding its shape, where enthusiasm and presence were valued more than credentials. This moment marked the start of his journey within electronic music’s rapid evolution.
Foundations in Production and Music Knowledge
Production came a bit later, developed through mentorship, curiosity, and a deep immersion in the music scene. Sandberg was fortunate to have the guidance of the head of music technology at Glasgow University, who introduced him to the fundamentals of studio production and MIDI programming. This education opened the door to a craft that would become central to his life.
Simultaneously working at FOPP Records in Glasgow, he became a buyer, exposing himself daily to an extraordinary variety of music from soul to jazz, classical to contemporary dance. Reflecting on this experience, he considers FOPP his “backbone for music knowledge,” helping him shape a broader artistic perspective than many of his contemporaries.

By the late 1990s, Sandberg’s foundation began to pay off. The release of “Jack Me Off” on Soma Records marked his first major breakthrough and launched a career that took him beyond Scotland’s borders. “When I released my first single on Soma Records, that was me off to the races,” he notes, recalling his excitement during his first international gig at Berlin’s E-Werk, one of the era’s defining techno institutions.
What followed was a steady rise establishing Funk D’Void as a defining voice in the late ’90s and early 2000s golden era of progressive house and techno. His productions, characterized by a balance of emotional depth and dancefloor functionality, resonated across scenes. His 2001 track “Diabla” became an enduring favorite, recently revitalized through a remix by Joris Voorn, showcasing its timeless appeal.
A Unique Perspective on Creative Process
Despite his commercial success, Sandberg maintains a perspective detached from conventional measures. “Being happy with your productions does bring a sense of relief once you learn when something has been completed to the best of your abilities,” he explains. The satisfaction he derives comes not from numbers or accolades, but from knowing a piece of music has reached its fullest expression.
This mindset enables him to navigate shifting trends without becoming captive to them. He emphasizes a creative process rooted in personal curiosity rather than audience expectations. His fascination with the listener’s reaction to music forms a core part of both his productions and performances.

“Setting the pace and being able to map out the journey successfully” is a valuable aspect of DJing for him. Despite his DJ prowess, he admits, “I prefer to be known as a music producer these days,” revealing where his deepest creative investment truly lies.

Sandberg finds joy in sharing knowledge, stating, “I get a similar buzz from showing people tips and advice as I do from performing a good gig.” Whether helping to refine strong ideas or coach artists through creative roadblocks, Fixed By Funk exemplifies his commitment to nurturing the culture that shaped him.

Despite the complexities of sustaining a long-term music career, Sandberg’s enthusiasm remains unwavering. “I don’t chase fame or monetary success,” he clarifies. His motivation is rooted in meaningful engagement—with music, people, and new experiences. After decades in an ever-evolving industry, he remains connected to the reasons he entered it.
Looking ahead, his ambitions are straightforward. “A change of scenery is in the cards,” he shares. “I’m feeling a longing to walk the earth, retelling funny stories and listening to other people’s.” This sentiment encapsulates his journey—from discovering Detroit techno in a Glasgow nightclub to becoming a pivotal figure in electronic music.
