Celebrating Three Years of Futurism Restated: A Musical Journey
A Simple Start: The Birth of a Newsletter
It’s hard to believe that three years have passed since the inception of Futurism Restated. The beginnings, while not celebrated, were deeply personal—a husband venting about the overwhelming amount of music that flew under his radar. The solution? A suggestion from my wife to start a newsletter. This simple piece of advice would transform into a platform that has connected thousands through the shared love of music.
The Name Behind the Music
The title Futurism Restated is inspired by an iconic song from the punk band Minutemen. While the music of D. Boon, Mike Watt, and George Hurley might not directly connect to the genres explored in the newsletter, their influence resonates deeply within me. Their ethos, particularly the minimalist yet potent phrase “The wheel’s an extension of the foot,” captures the essence of music’s ability to evolve and adapt, much like Detroit techno—a genre I adore and often explore.
A Milestone Journey: By the Numbers
Over the last 156 weeks, I’ve churned out a staggering 208 issues, reaching over 14,700 subscribers. Each week, I’ve dedicated my time to reviewing countless records and conducting interviews with artists who deserve to be heard. The math is overwhelming yet exhilarating—it’s a testament to how much music thrives beyond mainstream recognition.
- Record Reviews: Countless reviews that dig into new releases.
- Interviews: 33 insightful conversations with artists who shape the music landscape.
- Mixes Digest Series: Over 100 curated mixes that serve as a sonic diary.
- Eavesdropping Series: Five subscriber-exclusive mixes made in my studio.
- Yearly Playlists: A collection exceeding 150 hours of music, chronicling the sounds that inspire me.
A Platform for the Undiscovered
While Futurism Restated has become a cornerstone of my professional life, it transcends my personal endeavors. The newsletter aims to amplify the voices of musicians who often struggle to gain recognition amid the chaotic landscape of the music industry. Algorithms govern visibility today, and many brilliant artists deserve their moment. By keeping the majority of content accessible, I strive to create a music community that thrives on shared experience rather than exclusivity.
Support and Sustenance
Though running this newsletter is a labor of love, it requires financial support to thrive. My appeal to readers is simple: consider subscribing. For a limited time, I’m offering an annual subscription at a discount—a perfect opportunity to support a space dedicated to showcasing diverse musical talent. This model allows me to keep the newsletter free for many while sustaining quality content.
You can join our growing community of music lovers—all it takes is a few clicks to become a subscriber.
Unlocking Exclusive Content for Celebration
As part of the anniversary celebration, I’m unlocking a selection of some favorite posts exclusively for you. These include interviews with luminaries such as:
- Avalon Emerson: Dive into her origins in the Bay Area and her journey in dance music.
- Michael Mayer: Learn about the legacy of his illustrious mix Fabric 13.
- Seefeel: Revisit our discussion with this iconic band as they return with new music after a long hiatus.
- Anthony Naples: Insight into his ambivalence toward dance floors and his passion for ultramarathons.
- Kara-Lis Coverdale: A chance to explore her unorthodox approach to releasing multiple albums in a year.
Additionally, I’m temporarily lifting the paywall on an exclusive mix that kick-started my Eavesdropping series, encapsulating my current musical essence.
Wrap-up of the Artistic Journey
Futurism Restated is more than just a newsletter; it embodies a living, breathing exploration of music’s ever-changing landscape. Through thoughtful content and engaging interviews, it aims to bridge connections between listeners and underrepresented artists.
Engaging with the community, celebrating music, and opening dialogues around the stories and sounds that shape us—all this and more are what Futurism Restated has grown to represent.
Thank you for being part of this journey—here’s to reaching even greater heights together!
