GiGi FM: Navigating the Morning Slots in Electronic Dance Music
The morning slots are often regarded as one of the most unpredictable disciplines within electronic dance music (EDM). As a DJ, navigating these golden hours requires a skillful balance between cheesiness and heartfelt emotion, establishing a deeper connection with the crowd. GiGi FM, a fast-rising artist in the scene, embodies this ethos through her unique approach to sunrise sets. She masterfully weaves intricate techno with uplifting, dubby synths, creating a sound that resonates deeply with her audience.
Inspiration Behind the Mix
When GiGi FM recorded her latest mix, she drew inspiration from a recent morning performance at the enchanting Danza Futura festival. She aimed for a composition that would be groovy, tribal, and warm—perfect for the early hours when the sun begins to rise. Her desire was to craft a mix filled with rolling basslines that would urge everyone to move. Describing her style, she said it embodies a mix of Latin flair, sassiness, and subtle jazzy nuances. “I imagined it as an arc of sunshine, grooves, and love shared through friendship,” she explained, perfectly encapsulating the emotional connection she seeks to establish through her music.
Recording Setup
GiGi FM kept her recording process straightforward and intimate. She recorded the mix in her living room, utilizing a simple setup of two XDJs. This simplicity allows her to focus on what’s important: the music and the feelings it evokes. The ambiance of her home, combined with her proficient mixing, created a nurturing environment that shines through in the final product.
A Memorable Gig Experience
When asked about her most memorable gig, GiGi FM found it challenging to narrow down her choices. “Every gig has its own beauty,” she remarked, reflecting on the many incredible experiences she’s had. However, she noted that her performance at an illegal rave in Lausanne, known as L’Interro, stands out in her memory. Organized by friends, this event rekindled memories of her early days in London’s underground scene—the very roots of her passion for DJing. Through this connection, she found joy in engaging with a community that values authenticity and realness. “Big shout out to everyone involved,” she shared, emphasizing her appreciation for those who make such events special.
Secret Weapons
In the world of DJing, everyone has a few secret weapons up their sleeve, and for GiGi FM, that’s Steve Rachmad’s track “Disturbance.” “Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been obsessed with it,” she admitted. Rediscovering it while rummaging through her old folders was a pleasant surprise: “It was one of those ‘how did I ever forget about you?’ moments.” This rediscovery has made the track a staple in her sets, consistently adding depth and excitement to her performances.
Upcoming Projects
Excitingly, GiGi FM has a packed schedule ahead, with a series of festivals lined up throughout the summer. “Next week, I’m presenting my curation at Stone Techno, which I’m incredibly excited about,” she said, radiating enthusiasm for her upcoming gigs. Following that, she will grace the stage at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and participate in several beautiful festivals over July and August. Adding to her list of ventures, GiGi FM will unveil a brand new live A/V show with visual artist Vincent Rang at the opening concert of Draaimolen in early September. Furthermore, she hinted at new music on the horizon: “I’m really looking forward to sharing a project that’s very close to my heart.”
